Across the United States, employers are seeking workers with skills that align closely with current workforce needs (Bass & Valdez, 2020; D’Amico et al., 2018). Yet, community colleges often separate career and technical education (CTE) from continuing education (CE), creating parallel systems that serve similar students and industries, but lack intentional alignment. This division limits scalability and leaves untapped opportunities for credentialing and advancement.

In February 2023, Monroe Community College (MCC) was invited to join a cohort of nine other two-year institutions to participate in the Aspen Institute’s Unlocking Opportunity: The Post-Graduation Success and Equity Network.[i] More than a student success initiative, Unlocking Opportunity (UO) was designed to help participating colleges usher in sweeping reforms at their respective campuses.

Colleges and universities across the U.S. and beyond have recently been focused on efforts that promote a sense of student belonging or community (Ellard et al., 2022). However, students are not the only ones needing this connection. Faculty also need to feel a sense of belonging and community (Allen et al., 2021). Historically, educators worked within the confines of their office or classroom and had limited interactions with colleagues (Louis et al., 1996). The lack of interaction remains unchanged today and, in many ways, has been exacerbated by the pandemic (Leal Filho et al., 2021).

Our endeavors are centered on providing opportunities for connections between students, between students and campus resources, and between departments in order to improve the college experience. While we have often discussed the belief that our efforts are contributing to meaningful connections and positive experiences, our efforts to track the engagement of students have proven it.

Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) publishes learning outcomes for each course offered. Reading department course outcomes include identifying and applying practical and efficient comprehension strategies for college-level texts. These outcomes are essential for academic success at the postsecondary level. Collaborative efforts between the Student Success Librarian and Reading coordinator and faculty began in 2018. In 2019, faculty in the Reading and Library departments developed a final course assignment intended to assess student learning for each course outcome.

"Find the need and endeavor to meet it" is the seminal quote from David A. Sinclair, Director of YMCA of Dayton, later named Sinclair Community College, from 1887 to 1902. This powerful message still serves as a mantra for the institution’s faculty and staff. The original mission of D. A. Sinclair and the YMCA was to support the Dayton community by providing services such as adult education courses and job training (YMCA of Greater Dayton, n.d.).

The integration of BrickMMO into Humber Polytechnic’s programming fundamentals program in fall 2023 provided students with the opportunity to learn through a workplace integrated classroom (WIC) teaching methodology which resulted in increased learning, opportunities for solutions-based problem solving, and cross-program collaboration projects. BrickMMO is a smart city education platform made of a 1:45 scale smart city designed to provide students with a hands-on sandbox, or safe testing environment, to apply their newly acquired skills.
