Late one Friday afternoon toward the end of last spring term, the blank, off-white walls in the main hallway of Lane Community College's Building 19 in Eugene, Oregon, were transformed into a place of beauty and learning. Through the vision and energy of Lane's printmaking instructor, Susan Lowdermilk, and the support of Lane's Art on Campus Committee, a selection of her past students' finest prints became part of Lane's permanent art collection. The prints went on display not in the art department, but across campus in a wide hallway where students from all disciplines would see and be...

Fall is in the air...crisp mornings, vibrant leaves of red and orange, pumpkin pie and apple cider...and everyone's favorite fall festivals abound. Community colleges take advantage of this beautiful time of year to sponsor festivals in their communities.
Fall festivals are an opportunity for community colleges to generate much-needed funds for groups that could use the boost, especially in these difficult financial times and tight budgets. Many colleges sustain local artists, industries, and causes with the funds raised, enhancing the visibility of the college and the community. Others use...

When Chancellor Helen Cox first arrived on the Kaua'i Community College (KCC) campus in August 2008, she had already made it clear that she believed that KCC had an important role to play in moving the island of Kaua'i toward sustainability. In the public forum that was part of her interview, she was told that while much of the country was slowly sliding into the abyss when it came to economics and sustainability, Kaua'i was going over a cliff. She was then asked what she would do to help. In her answer, Cox confessed she didn't have all the answers, but then proceeded to suggest some ideas...

While many of the articles we've featured focus on art, music, and entertainment, others address the more sobering needs of the people our colleges serve: programs to help...

On October 24, 2008, volunteers gathered at Bakersfield College to test their ability to vaccinate the community in a point-of-dispensing exercise. The college entered into the partnership because if Bakersfield was ever to experience pandemic influenza or another such disaster, it might be necessary to distribute medications to many citizens quickly, and Bakersfield College would be called on to provide the service.
Bakersfield College operated the entire event in an incident command system structure, which aligned all services and volunteers under one command structure. Calling on the...
