Hands-on experience is essential for aviation students at Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC), and thanks to the generosity of one of the program's most valued partners, students are taking the controls like never before. The Boeing Company's recent donation of four new A160 helicopter engines will expose students to the latest industry technology and prepare them for a career in today's aviation field.
The A160 engine was originally designed for Boeing's A160 Hummingbird, an unmanned aerial vehicle helicopter used by the military from 2002-2012 for reconnaissance, surveillance, target...

Not long ago, it was rare for an undergraduate student to become involved in scientific research. These days, however, most graduate school-bound undergraduates do laboratory or field work beyond what's required. Undergraduate research gives students a taste of what a career in science would be like and an edge in applying for graduate schools and jobs. But the edge isn't what it used to be, because many graduate schools and employers have come to expect it.
In a move to ensure that Bellevue College students are school- and work-ready, campus leaders are working to develop the Bellevue...

There's a little-known crisis occurring across the nation; a problem not many are aware of or would expect. Unless you're an educator. Specifically, a college educator facing a new class of freshmen. Because, it turns out that 66 percent (Complete College America, 2011), or about two-thirds, of your students, all of them recent high school graduates, are not going to be ready for what you are about to teach them.
What does this mean? It means that those students, instead of jumping feet first into freshman year, will spend extra hours and dollars taking remedial courses in math and English...

This year's Kid's Vision for Life See to Succeed event at San Jacinto College impacted approximately 1,133 school children from the Pasadena Independent School District (PISD).
Out of those who visited the college for free eye examinations, 96 percent were issued eye glasses, and 154 received medical referrals for further eye care treatment. This is See to Succeed's third year in delivering free eye glasses to PISD children in need.
"The beauty of this partnership is that our students are able to receive the tools they need to become successful," said Renea Ivy, associate superintendent of...

An anonymous person stated, "E-learning doesn't just 'happen'! It requires careful planning and implementation." New Mexico State University Alamogordo (NMSU-A) understands this statement and is working diligently to become an institution known for the quality of its online instruction.
Online education began at NMSU-A in the late 1990s. In the early 2000s, interest in online education began to grow among a small but significant percentage of the faculty, primarily as a means of providing greater access to students in NMSU-A's 6,627 square mile service area. The number of courses offered...

As Iowa's economy slowly recovers, renewed hiring has shed light on a new challenge: the state's increasing gap between the skills employers need and the skills potential workers actually possess.
Roughly 50 percent of Iowa's available jobs and growing career areas are considered middle skill, requiring more than a high school education but less than a four-year degree. However, 66 percent of Iowa's unemployed or underemployed have no recognized educational credentials past high school. The same study highlighted that worker shortages stretch far beyond the current workforce, meaning the...

With the prediction of more than 4,000 new manufacturing jobs to be created in Upstate South Carolina in the next few years, there is a call for a new way of preparing people to satisfy the needs of the manufacturing sector. In order to grow a workforce that has the skills to close the gap between what employers need and what's currently available, industry requirements must be aligned with education.
At Greenville Technical College, we are doing that through partnerships with companies like General Electric (GE), BMW, Michelin, and Bosch Rexroth. These programs allow companies to create the...

Higher education has traditionally been divided along very clear lines: colleges and universities offer bachelor's and graduate degrees, while community colleges offer two-year associate degrees and certificates. That line is not as clear anymore, with 21 states now allowing their community and technical colleges to develop bachelor's degrees, up from 11 states just eight years ago. The community college baccalaureate is an increasingly popular trend because it's an effective way for community colleges to fulfill their workforce development mission.

Kristin Grue doesn't teach a typical high school English class, and maybe it's because she doesn't teach in a high school, or to typical students. Grue is a teacher for the Access to Success program at Helena College University of Montana. The program aims to re-engage youth who have dropped out of high school, by bringing them to college.
Access to Success is a high school diploma completion program with an emphasis on earning a professional certificate or degree while completing high school requirements concurrently. All coursework is provided in an adult learning environment. The program...

Tallahassee Community College (TCC) has been awarded funding from Campus Compact to pilot a program designed to help community college students stay in school and ultimately graduate. The opportunity has excited faculty and staff of the college, which serves more than 15,000 students in Florida's capital city.
"This builds directly on what we are already doing to support college completion," said TCC President Jim Murdaugh.

Last year, as a part of the American Graduation Initiative goal, President Barack Obama challenged the nation's 1,200 community colleges to produce an additional five million graduates by 2020.
In the wake of this challenge, and of the increasing number of senior administrators who will be retiring, community colleges have been faced with a growing leadership gap and inadequate succession pipeline. According to the American Association of Community Colleges, the pace of administrative and other key staff retirements exceeds the pace at which these positions are being restaffed (Schults, 2001...
