2021-2022 Innovation of the Year Award Winner: Wake Technical Community College

Wake Tech's Student Experience Program

Launched at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wake Technical Community College's Student Experience Program (SEP) coordinates academic and student support and gateway English and math courses to (1) better serve faculty and students with a one-stop contact for all support, and (2) increase student success and retention in the highest-enrolled English and math courses by proactively providing wraparound learning and personal support to students with the most need. Since spring 2020, teams of faculty and support staff have served students in 8,000 seats each fall, 6,000 seats each spring, and thousands more each summer. An internal formal evaluation indicates that the SEP is associated with statistically significant and positive improvements in student success and withdrawal rates in targeted gateway courses, especially among female, Black/African American, and Pell Grant-receiving students; this is particularly the case when faculty and staff closely partner to offer the instruction and support students need, right when they need it. Since it began, the SEP has shown broad-based engagement among faculty, staff, and administrators.
