Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) is one of the 10 individually accredited colleges that make up the Maricopa County Community College District. The institution primarily serves the Southeast Valley of Phoenix, an area that continues to experience considerable growth in population and in economic and workforce development.

CGCC’s Quick Start classes are opening doors for students who are ready to move quickly from learning to employment, while still building long-term pathways to education and career growth. For many students, the journey begins with short, focused training in high-demand fields such as composites, sheet metal, and semiconductor technology. Designed in direct response to industry workforce needs, Quick Start classes provide hands-on, job-ready skills in a matter of weeks, allowing students to step confidently into the workforce while maintaining clear opportunities for continued education.

The Workforce Need Across Arizona

Over the past several years, the state has experienced rapid expansion in aerospace, defense, advanced manufacturing, and semiconductor production. According to regional workforce data from the Arizona Commerce Authority (2025) and Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity (n.d.), thousands of technician-level positions are anticipated to be needed annually in these sectors, with employers reporting ongoing difficulty filling roles that require specialized technical skills.

In aerospace and defense alone, Arizona continues to rank among the top states nationally for industry concentration, with steady growth in aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, and component production. At the same time, semiconductor investments across the region have generated significant demand for entry-level technicians prepared to work in high-tech fabrication and production environments.

Bridging Industry Demand and Educational Pathways

Local employers indicated a deficit of short-term, competency-based training that could prepare individuals quickly for immediate hire while still allowing for continued educational advancement. Traditional program timelines did not always align with urgent hiring needs, and prospective students often sought faster on-ramps into family-sustaining careers. The Quick Start model emerged as a solution to this issue, meeting immediate workforce shortages while preserving stackable pathways into certificates, degrees, and advanced credentials.

Statewide Impact and National Recognition

The Quick Start model has had a significant impact across Arizona by accelerating workforce readiness in critical industries. Its success in rapidly connecting learners to employment has positioned the model as a scalable solution; additionally, it has been recognized and adopted nationally as an effective approach to addressing urgent workforce shortages. Aligning short-term training with long-term educational pathways, the model balances immediate labor market needs with sustainable career growth.

Aerospace and Defense Pathways

In the composites and sheet metal programs, students gain practical experience working with the same materials, tools, and techniques used in today’s aerospace and defense industries. Graduates are prepared for technician roles supporting aircraft manufacturing, repair, and advanced production. These courses also serve as a strong entry point into CGCC’s Aviation Maintenance and Powerplant Technology programs, enabling students to build upon their skills and pursue long-term careers as certified aviation and aerospace mechanics.

The strength of these programs is reinforced through CGCC’s Aerospace and Defense Business & Industry Leadership Advisory Council (BILT) and its ongoing collaboration with regional and national industry partners, including Mesa Gateway Airport, Boeing, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, Able Aerospace, Honeywell Aerospace, Virgin Galactic, Embraer, Keysight Technologies, and Garmin. Through this partnership, the council supports curriculum alignment with current workforce demands, contributes equipment and resources, and helps recruit experienced industry employees to teach Quick Start classes, providing students with direct access to real-world expertise, clear industry expectations, and meaningful connections to employment pathways.

The industry partnership model enhances both the college’s academic relevance and Arizona’s workforce pipeline by ensuring that graduates are prepared for real-world roles upon completion. Robert Medina, Vice President of Service and Operations for Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, shared, “CGCC’s Quick Start graduates come to us with the technical foundation and professional mindset needed to contribute on day one. The alignment between curriculum and industry standards reduces onboarding time and strengthens our overall workforce pipeline.”

Semiconductor Workforce Development

The semiconductor Quick Start class prepares students for technician positions in Arizona’s rapidly expanding semiconductor sector. Students learn foundational skills aligned with industry standards, enabling them to transition directly into employment with leading technology and manufacturing partners, including Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. The success of this certification pathway led Intel to award CGCC a $115,000 grant to further strengthen the semiconductor workforce pipeline. As a result, key semiconductor competencies were embedded into two upper-level engineering courses, providing students with advanced industry-relevant skills that enhance employability while also improving transferability into four-year engineering programs.

Student outcomes strongly reflect the effectiveness of the Quick Start model. Based on student survey data, more than 90 percent of learners who complete Quick Start classes secure employment within three months of completion. These outcomes demonstrate the value of accelerated, industry-aligned training in helping students achieve rapid economic mobility while maintaining access to continued education.

Wraparound Support and Student Success

What makes these programs especially impactful is the wraparound support students receive throughout their journey. From early embedded advising partnerships with high school partners to on-campus resources such as CARES—an early-alert case management program—and student success services, CGCC supports students not only in the classroom but also as they transition into the workforce.

The approach is reflected in the success of CGCC’s dual enrollment-only semiconductor Quick Start cohort, where 100 percent of participating students successfully completed the program, demonstrating the strength of early pathway alignment and targeted support. Career guidance, employer connections, and ongoing educational advising further ensure that students are prepared for their next steps, whether entering the workforce immediately or continuing toward certificates, degrees, or engineering pathways.

Measurable Growth and Long-Term Impact

Since spring 2022, almost 700 students have completed Quick Start classes, demonstrating the growing reach and effectiveness of these accelerated pathways. Through strong industry partnerships, measurable employment outcomes, and seamless connections to continued education, CGCC’s Quick Start initiative is transforming short-term training into long-term success, strengthening both Arizona’s workforce and the national model for workforce-driven education.
