Scaling Vision, Amplifying Voice: May 2026 Insights From League Members

The League for Innovation in the Community College announces the release of its May 2026 issues of Leadership Abstracts, Learning Abstracts, and Innovation Showcase, each advancing a timely conversation on how colleges lead, teach, and innovate in a rapidly evolving landscape.
In Leadership Abstracts, “Concept to Commitment: The Leadership Challenge of Scaling CBE,” Jamie Vandenburgh examines the persistent gap between piloting competency-based education and scaling it across the institution. The article highlights how leadership must move beyond conceptual support to sustained institutional commitment—aligning systems, culture, and resources to ensure that CBE fulfills its promise of measuring learning through demonstrated competencies rather than seat time.
Learning Abstracts features “Listening, Reading, Reflecting: The Role of Oral and Written Feedback in College Peer Review,” by Holly Wheeler. This piece explores how integrating oral and written feedback in peer review deepens student learning. Drawing on the collaborative nature of peer feedback, where students read, respond, and reflect together, the article underscores how structured dialogue strengthens writing, critical thinking, and learner agency.
In Innovation Showcase, “Merced College Pioneers Innovation in Agricultural Education,” James Leonard highlights a forward-looking program that blends hands-on learning with industry-aligned curriculum. The article demonstrates how applied, workforce-focused education can position students for success while responding directly to regional economic needs—illustrating the power of innovation grounded in community context.
These issues reinforce a shared message: Transformative change in community colleges depends on leadership that scales innovation, pedagogy that centers meaningful feedback, and programs that connect learning to real-world impact.
