Lindsay Roark
Biography:
Lindsay Roark is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Academic Chair of the Mathematics Department at Anne Arundel Community College. While home from York College of Pennsylvania one summer, she took a single mathematics course at AACC and was struck by the level of care, expertise, and support shown by her professors. That experience shaped her understanding of the community college mission and later led her back to AACC as a faculty member and academic leader. Roark teaches a wide range of mathematics courses, including statistics, college algebra, and calculus. Her teaching is student centered and focused on building classroom communities where students feel supported, engaged, and capable. She is inspired by the diverse backgrounds of community college students and designs courses that recognize the many responsibilities students balance outside the classroom. A central focus of her work is accessibility in mathematics education. Since joining AACC, she has redesigned course materials across multiple courses to ensure full accessibility. This includes screen reader friendly documents, captioned instructional videos, tactile and raised line graphics, and three dimensional printed models for vision impaired students. She works closely with Disability Support Services and colleagues to reduce barriers and create a frictionless path for students to reach their educational and career goals. As Academic Chair, Roark is committed to continuing the Mathematics Department tradition of excellence while guiding its growth into the future. She is especially passionate about increasing access and interest in mathematics for first generation college students and others who may not initially see themselves reflected in quantitative fields. She views mathematics as a gateway discipline that can build confidence, persistence, and a sense of belonging. Roark is deeply engaged in professional growth, mentoring, and service and enjoys collaborating with colleagues across the college. She has been recognized for her work through the AACC Impact and Excellence Award and selection as a League for Innovation in the Community College Excellence Award recipient. She is humbled to share this recognition alongside many dedicated and innovative community college educators. Outside of work, Roark enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, three children, and two dogs. She enjoys hiking, skiing, visiting Fenwick Island, and whenever possible, planning a trip to Disney World.
