2022-2023 Innovation of the Year Award Winner: Delta College

Web-Based Audiovisual Platform for the Health Profession

A new web-based audiovisual platform was created for Delta College’s health professions labs. The platform includes patient cameras and microphones with optical/digital zoom for oral view and patient/student interaction in the dental clinic, X-ray/sterilization areas, and lecture classroom; PTA area instructor and student stations with cameras and microphones; enhanced audio/video recording capability in simulation rooms, control room, and testing rooms in the health professions lab. Benefits include that (1) students can observe the actions and interactions of their peers from another area; (2) repetitive scenarios can be recorded and made available for multiple viewers via the web-based system, reducing the number of runs needed; (3) supervision of students at different levels of learning can be done from a central location viewing station, relieving stress on the faculty-to-student ratio; and (4) the placement of cameras allows faculty to evaluate multiple students and stations from the viewing station monitor, thus increasing the ability for faculty to provide immediate feedback to the students.
