The Student Success Center: Expanding a Culture of Caring Through a Multifaceted Approach to Student Success

Central Ohio Technical College established the Student Success Center to streamline the availability of academic and personal supports for at-risk students. The holistic approach combines tutoring and testing services, student success coaching, and basic needs support. The center focuses on initiatives ranging from managing outreach to at-risk students, responding to faculty early alerts, conducting in-class and general success workshops, supporting food pantry deliveries to the college’s extended campuses, managing testing and tutoring services, helping students to develop success plans, and developing robust academic programming for at-risk and first semester students. Student Success Center staff also connect students facing personal, nonacademic challenges to their academic success with campus and community resources. The center’s holistic approach has increased student utilization of academic and personal supports, streamlined the services offered so students can move more seamlessly between them, and improved operational workflows and internal communication.
