Community colleges continue to redefine leadership, learning, and civic engagement—and the League for Innovation’s October 2025 publications showcase how. The latest issues of Leadership Abstracts, Learning Abstracts, and Innovation Showcase highlight practical strategies and forward-thinking initiatives shaping the future of two-year institutions.

In the October issue of Leadership Abstracts, “Shared Governance in Action: An Empowering and Collaborative Approach to LMS Review and Adoption,” Delia Ann Pfister explores how Cuyahoga Community College successfully used shared governance to review and adopt a new learning management system. By involving faculty, staff, and administrators in a collaborative process, the institution piloted platforms, established selection criteria, and made decisions rooted in both pedagogical needs and institutional goals. The piece underscores the importance of consensus building and shared responsibility in technology adoption.

Learning Abstracts features “Workforce Development at Rogue Community College: Aligning Educational Pathways,” by Lisa Parks, which details how the college is strengthening its role as a regional workforce partner. Through credential mapping, employer engagement, and embedded support services, the college is aligning short-term training programs with degree pathways and labor market demands. The article highlights how thoughtful program design ensures that students can seamlessly move from certificates into advanced programs or directly into the workforce.

The October issue of Innovation Showcase by Sahar Joakim Resch, “Innovating Civic Discourse: Community College Outward,” explores how St. Louis Community College fostered civic dialogue as part of its public mission. By developing structured forums, collaborating with regional workforce partners, and encouraging student participation, the college created spaces for civil, solutions-oriented discussions on community issues. The article illustrates how colleges can strengthen democratic practice while deepening their role as community hubs.
