Biography:
Marjorie Ader Kerbel is a professor of foundational studies, honors program advisor and general academic advisor at Reading Area Community College, Reading, Pennsylvania. She embodies the belief that in order for students to be successful they need to be supported in the classroom and beyond. In the spring of 2021, Marjorie was awarded a sabbatical and during that time researched over 75 agencies, which evolved into a resource manual. This manual provides faculty and staff options to assist students in crisis. This manual has been shared locally, regionally, and nationally over the last two years. Marjorie continues to engage her students outside the classroom as the Campus Life Committee Chairperson and Advisor of the Community Service Club on campus. Currently, Marjorie has been working on creating new best practices in developmental education to determine why students struggle with writing. Preliminary data suggests that reading is the reason students struggle with writing. Most recently, Marjorie and her colleague are piloting whether embedded and connected tutoring will be the answer. The preliminary research was presented at the CRLA conference in fall of 2022. This spring more results from this research will be presented at the AACC conference.
