Inclusion, Collaboration, and Innovation
Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the Foothill-De Anza Community College District (FHDA) is well known for its innovative spirit and inclusive culture. Cultures like this one rarely happen on their own, but with thought and intention, they can be created and nurtured. During the opening session, FHDA’s Chancellor will discuss developing and supporting a healthy, innovative, collaborative, and productive culture that facilitates student learning and success in a climate of equity, civility, and respect.
Judy Miner, Chancellor, Foothill-De Anza Community College District; Michael Gavin, Vice President for Learning, Anne Arundel Community College; Lloyd Holmes, Vice President for Student Services, Monroe Community College

9:15 - 9:45 AM
Culture and the Innovation Life Cycle (Part I: Panel)

The League is partnering with The Collaboratory on the Community College Innovation Accelerator, whose authors explain that “few [higher education institutions] mature their innovation beyond the emerging point.” Awareness and understanding of the innovation life cycle can help college leaders support and promote a culture of innovation. Panelists will discuss the innovation life cycle and offer context from their experiences. The discussion will cover the rationale, drivers, and incentives for innovation; barriers that can derail innovation and techniques for overcoming them; and expected outcomes of innovation. Panelists will offer insights and strategies for infusing innovation into an existing culture and sustaining a culture of innovation.
Stephanie Bulger, Vice Chancellor, Instructional Services, San Diego Community College District; Laurie Rancourt, Senior Vice President, Academic, Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning; Randy Weber, Vice President, Student Success and Engagement, Johnson County Community College

9:55 - 11:25 AM
Culture and the Innovation Life Cycle (Part II: Discussion)
In small groups, participants will discuss the innovation life cycle as applied to three specific areas: (a) the K-20 education pipeline; (b) student success issues related to enrollment, persistence, and completion; and (c) the workforce pipeline and local/regional economic development. Ideas, solutions, issues, and concerns that emerge from these discussions will be captured and included in a summary report distributed to participants after the event.

11:25 AM - 12:30 PM
Sharing Innovation
The League has long advanced and facilitated the sharing of innovations among community college leaders and educators. Participants in these gatherings applaud the value they find in sharing ideas and practices, and we see the results when an innovation at one college is adapted by another with great success. During this session, all participants are invited to share an innovation at their college. Prior to the event, registered participants will receive a simple, one-page template to complete in preparation for this innovation-sharing activity.
Bill Lamb, Vice President, Academic Affairs, Kirkwood Community College; Normah Salleh-Barone, Vice President, Student Development, Moraine Valley Community College; Lori Zakel, Professor, Department of Communication, Sinclair Community College

12:30 - 1:20 PM
Lunch Presentation: Achieving Pathways Goals With Student-Centered Design
The presenter will share key research findings, including: (a) program maps and meta-majors help colleges transition away from the cafeteria model, yet most colleges start the process without a hierarchy of student needs, inadvertently adding time to degree; (b) guided pathways reforms independent from scheduling adjustments run the risk of creating course scheduling bottlenecks due to shifts in student demand; (c) while most colleges add more advisors as part of academic reform, leading colleges are professionalizing the role of advisor to include goals-based objectives; and students may still fall off credit place, despite the most well-designed guided pathways reforms, and innovative colleges have made their academic calendar more flexible to help these students regain pace.
Lindsey Klein, Managing Director, EAB

1:30 - 3:30 PM
Culture and Collaboration: Breaking the Silos
Facilitators in the League’s Faculty Voices Project heard repeatedly from faculty that, as one instructor quite frankly stated, “silos are a big problem.” Faculty, like administrators, recognize that organizational silos are an obstacle to collaboration. While hindering priority alignment, effective communication, and diverse viewpoints, silos can also inhibit innovation. In this session, after a framework for collaboration is presented, panelists will discuss strategies for increasing collaboration within the college and with external partners. The session includes small group discussions around participants’ collaboration issues and solutions. Ideas, solutions, issues, and concerns that emerge from these discussions will be captured and included in a summary report distributed to participants after the event.
Randy Weber, Vice President, Student Success and Engagement, Johnson County Community College; Ed Bonahue, Provost and Vice President, Academic Affairs, Santa Fe College; Amy Bosley, Vice President, Organizational Development and Human Resources, Valencia College; Marcia Conston, Vice President, Enrollment and Student Services, Central Piedmont Community College; Jean Conway, President, Eastfield College; Reva Curry, Vice President, Instruction and Learning Services, Delta College

3:30 - 3:45 PM
Closing Session
The closing session will include reflection on the day’s program, including next steps for enhancing innovation and collaboration in community college culture, and discussion of ideas for future Vice Presidents Tracks at the Innovations Conference.
Bill Lamb, Vice President, Academic Affairs, Kirkwood Community College; Normah Salleh-Barone, Vice President, Student Development, Moraine Valley Community College; Lori Zakel, Professor, Department of Communication, Sinclair Community College
