2021-2022 Innovation of the Year Award Winner: Wallace State Community College

Joint Programs With the University of Alabama in Birmingham

The Wallace State Community College (WSCC) Nursing department created a joint associate and bachelor’s degree nursing program in conjunction with the University of Alabama (UAB) Nursing department. The program enables highly qualified students to attain both AAS and BSN degrees simultaneously, which reduces time to and cost of degree attainment. The first cohort of joint students was admitted in fall 2020, with 100 percent of the graduates successfully passing the NCLEX exam. Currently, 52 students are participating in the partnership. This is a reproducible model for other Alabama Community College System colleges and has been implemented at Jeff State and Calhoun community colleges. Another initiative being developed in conjunction with UAB offers a Practical Nursing Program (PNP) as well as an Associate Degree Mobility Track for qualified UAB employees. Approved applicants will receive scholarships from UAB to cover the program costs for their respective degree completion. These are examples of innovative partnerships to address the workforce demand for qualified nurses through a unique partnership between a community college and university.
