From Core Values to Culture: A Data-Driven, People-First Employee Engagement Model
Merced College developed a comprehensive, people-first employee engagement model that integrates recruitment, onboarding, professional development, workplace culture, and well-being into a cohesive, hire-to-retire system. Key components include structured onboarding; the President’s Leadership Academy; and a year-long Well-Being Institute that builds resilience, connection, and professional growth. Flexible work practices and ongoing engagement efforts further support a culture of belonging and accountability. Outcomes demonstrate sustained impact, including a 96% employee retention rate, improved employee engagement survey results, and significant gains in well-being, with more than 90% of participants reporting increased access to tools and resources. Leadership development has increased internal mobility, supporting a grow-your-own pipeline. Engagement survey results are used to inform improvements, ensuring that the model evolves in response to employee needs. This integrated approach strengthens organizational culture and enhances the college’s ability to serve students.
