Job Description:
Title: Dean of STEM

Unit: Non-Unit Professional (NUP)

Reports to: Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs

General Summary: Middlesex Community College's STEM division is home to dynamic and innovative programs, including the Commonwealth's largest biotechnology program at a community college. The Dean of STEM is responsible for providing academic leadership and administrative oversight for the STEM Division at Middlesex Community College. This position requires a creative and knowledgeable individual with a positive approach to provide management for the science, technology, engineering, and math areas, and support the college's strategic initiatives. The Dean of STEM is accountable for team performance and supports managers in their roles to meet College and divisional goals. The Dean carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Middlesex Community College's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; creating an environment which supports innovative teaching and learning; appraising performance and implementing improvement plans when necessary; resolving problems and concerns presented by faculty and students. Duties and Responsibilities:
Ensures the integrity, excellence, and ongoing development of the academic programs and disciplines within the division while responding to workforce needs. Departments within the division include Science, Biotechnology, Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Provides leadership and oversight for planning, assessment, development, and administration of the personnel, curriculum, programs, operations, facilities, and equipment within the division.
Provides leadership, encouragement, and supervision to the STEM Department Chairs to ensure the development and implementation of institutional and divisional initiatives and policies.
Ensures the integration/coordination of programs and initiatives within the division.
Promotes and maintains responsive community relations. Represents the division and college in external activities and initiatives.
Collaborates with the college's Office of Career-Integrated Learning, specifically the Learn & Earn experiences in STEM programs.
Manages the Colleges STEM Starter Academy
Functions as part of the Provost's leadership team, serving on appropriate working groups and councils.
Establishes, maintains, and monitors policies that provide for optimal educational practices in the division.
Provides oversight of articulation agreements to ensure appropriate educational and career pathways for programs within the division.
Develops and manages grants to support activities in the division.
Collaborates with personnel from other departments and Academic Divisions to ensure effective program implementation.
Resolves student and faculty issues; collaborates with others as necessary to achieve resolution. Oversees all faculty and student grievance procedures and insures adherence to college affirmative action and Title IX policies.
Promotes expansive excellence for diverse students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Administers specific components of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, including reviewing the workload for full-time faculty, evaluating faculty and department chairs, making recommendations for contract renewal, promotion, tenure, and sabbatical requests. Addresses employee relations issues through consultation with Human Resources while ensuring alignment with collective bargaining agreements and personnel handbooks.
Determines priorities for budgetary expenditures; Develops, plans, and manages the budget to ensure the acquisition of necessary equipment and supplies for classrooms, laboratories, and other instructional settings, monitors budgets and electronically approves purchase requests.
Executes the academic vision of the Provost by developing and implementing college and divisional activities consistent with the college's mission and strategic direction.
Develops schedules for all classes offered in the STEM area.
Coordinates searches for full-time faculty and staff positions.
Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in STEM discipline.
Successful teaching experience in a STEM discipline.
Commitment to the mission and philosophy of the college with a strong understanding and respect for the goals of college activities.
Leadership, planning, management, organizational and supervisory skills.
Ability to think strategically and develop relevant and realistic plans, programs, and goals for the college.
Ability to recognize college-wide priorities and work cooperatively and collaboratively to support their accomplishment.
Financial management and negotiation skills.
Ability to market programs and ideas; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to establish positive public relations, and to work collaboratively with people to set and achieve common goals.
Experience in curriculum development.
Ability to interpret other legal and administrative requirements related to the division.
Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation, veterans, and individuals with different academic preparation levels and varying physical and learning abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:
Doctoral Degree preferred.
Understanding of and commitment to the role of the community college in higher education.
Knowledge of cultural competency skills framework.

Additional Information:
Salary Range: $110,000-$120,000 actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience. Employees of Middlesex Community College are considered employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and receive benefits, which include:

Hours: 37.5 per week, schedule to be determined upon hire. This position will be eligible for a maximum of two days of telework in accordance with the College's telework policy.
