Jennifer Osborn
Biography:
I am a Criminal Justice and Public Administration instructor at Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC), where I combine over 15 years of law enforcement experience with innovative teaching methods. Currently, I am in my final year of pursuing a Ph.D. in Executive Criminal Justice, working on my dissertation while maintaining a 3.97 GPA. As a wife to a police officer and a veteran of the United States Air Force, I bring a unique perspective to both my academic work and teaching. I'm also proud to be a mother to two amazing children, balancing my professional achievements with my role as a parent.
Before transitioning to academia, I served as a law enforcement professional, progressing through roles including school resource officer, property crimes investigator, and ultimately reaching the rank of sergeant. During my law enforcement career, I supervised 19 officers in middle and high schools throughout Cumberland County, managed a 65-vehicle fleet, and served as training coordinator for a 60-officer section. This took me to my favorite job at FTCC.
At FTCC, where I serve as a Faculty Fellow specializing in educational technology, I lead college-wide HyFlex training and helped pioneer Blackboard Ultra implementation within the Criminal Justice department. I teach a diverse range of subjects, including Criminology, Organized Crime, and multiple Public Administration courses. My commitment to student success extends beyond traditional office hours, as I make myself available before and after class to accommodate various student schedules. I have developed four new Public Administration courses through independent research. I also enhanced three existing criminal justice courses, with them all earning Quality Matters certifications. As a member of the Living Law Committee, I create educational videos about Supreme Court cases and organize campus-wide presentations featuring community panel discussions.
My recent accolades include the 2023-2024 Excellence in Teaching Award and a state finalist, the 2023 NISOD Excellence Award, and the 2023 President's Leadership Award. I serve as Faculty Council Secretary. Whether teaching in person, online, or in HyFlex formats, I maintain a student-centered approach that bridges theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, drawing from my diverse experiences as a veteran, law enforcement professional, educator, and parent. I am particularly passionate about making complex concepts accessible through real-world examples from my law enforcement career, whether explaining probable cause through actual traffic stops or illustrating criminal behavior theories with cases I investigated.
