English 101+: A High-Impact Corequisite Model Advancing Student Success and Equity

English 101+ is an innovative corequisite model that embeds an additional hour of structured academic support into a credit English 101 course at no cost to students. Unlike traditional developmental models, this approach reframes support as integrated, faculty-driven engagement that builds student confidence, agency, and academic success. Developed collaboratively by faculty and launched in spring 2024, the model includes targeted interventions such as conferences, scaffolded writing instruction, and guided engagement with campus resources. Across four semesters, English 101+ consistently outperformed standard and accelerated sections, with success rates ranging from 74-79% compared to 60-70% in traditional sections. Notably, the model eliminated the achievement gap between African American and White students in spring 2025. Recognized nationally with the Diane Hacker Award, English 101+ demonstrates a scalable, equity-focused redesign of gateway coursework.
