2024-2025 Innovation of the Year Award Winner: Hillsborough Community College

Empowering Future-Ready Professionals Through Financial Technology Education

Hillsborough Community College’s (HCC) FinTech program—launched in spring 2025—is the first of its kind in Florida and one of only two in the U.S. offered at the two-year college level. This innovative program prepares students for high-demand careers in financial technology by combining finance; data; and cutting-edge tools like blockchain, AI, and digital payments. Courses are hands-on, data-driven, and career-focused, developed with input from industry leaders and aligned with Florida’s workforce priorities. Support from JP Morgan Chase Foundation allowed HCC to develop curriculum and hire the program’s first faculty member. The State of Florida later awarded $500,000 to remodel existing space into a modern FinTech lab, with HCC investing additional funds in advanced technology and furnishings. In 2023-2024, the HCC team worked with faculty, business leaders, and subject matter experts to shape the program, which now serves as the statewide model for future FinTech programs. With strong industry ties, practical learning experiences, and a growing FinTech economy in Tampa Bay, HCC’s FinTech program is redefining career pathways and academic innovation for the next generation.
