Care Team Advising and Wraparound Support Model
Wake Technical Community College (Wake Tech) sought to transform the delivery of academic advising and support services to an intentional, relationship-based model. While the college offered many resources and supports, engagement with academic advising and other services was often student-initiated and lacked a personal connection as the college stretched to serve nearly 30,000 students annually with limited technological and human resources. To achieve the desired outcome, Wake Tech developed Care Teams to become students’ key points of contact from admissions through graduation. Fourteen Care Teams were established, organized by the college’s 13 career fields, with an additional team focused on veteran/military students. To date, the model has delivered an assigned advisor to over 15,000 students who would not have had one assigned under the former advising structure. The composition of each team includes dedicated Academic Advisors, a Student Success Coach, a Career Coach, and faculty advisors. Other specialists are included according to specific student needs, such as benefit specialists for veteran students.
