2023-2024 Innovation of the Year Award Winner: Monroe Community College - SUNY

Champion of Psychological Safety

After reading “What is Psychological Safety,” by Amy Gallo in Harvard Business Review and Harvard Professor Amy Edmonson’s The Fearless Organization, Monroe Community College’s innovator began championing psychological safety (PS). He administered psychological safety Index testing for all directors and above within the Administrative Services division and became DISC certified with the Maxwell leadership team. He worked with Maxwell to develop a year-long training program for division directors and above, including topics such as 360-degree learning, leading from the middle, psychological safety, and values. He then expanded the training to approximately 60 personnel outside of the division with lunch and learns. He is conducting DISC assessments and facilitating discussions on how to connect with teams and embrace PS. This has led to improved communications, creativity, innovation, and savings of approximately $500k within the last year. He has also presented multiple presentations on VUCA/VUCA Prime. Team members embracing PS and creating PS environments have served as conduits to becoming more VUCA Prime leaders.
