Pre-Health Society Aims to Increase the Preparedness of Students to Apply to Medical Programs
Hillsborough Community College’s American Medical Student Association (AMSA) Pre-Health Chapter, committed to guiding and supporting students pursuing health professions, has been instrumental in identifying and addressing critical gaps in pre-health students' knowledge of medical school application and resource utilization. We introduced the Pre-Health Society with a white coat module that guides students through exploring health careers, creating a Mappd account, engaging with prerequisite activities, exploring transfer programs, meeting with advisors, creating plans, participating in activities, and reflecting on a career in healthcare. Over 450 students have participated. We held three White Coat Ceremonies honoring 75 students who earned their white coats, and we have awarded over 30 students with student success and professionalism awards. Furthermore, our student-led research has been adopted nationally by the AMSA with more than 20 colleges across the U.S. participating in the research project.
