2022-2023 Innovation of the Year Award Winner: Long Beach City College

On-Campus After-School Program for Student Parents/Guardians

In October 2022, Long Beach City College (LBCC) launched on-campus, no-cost after-school care for student parents/guardians in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach (BGC) and Long Beach USD. In fall 2021, nearly 20 percent of students who responded to an online reopening survey identified childcare as a barrier to returning to in-person learning. Subsequently, LBCC contacted BGC to explore offering an after-school program on campus for LBCC students and secured funding support from the local K-12 school district. The program, which launched in fall 2022, is open Monday through Friday 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and provides homework help, a hot meal and snack, and academic enrichment (STEAM, music, physical recreation) to children 6 to 18 years old. BGC provides staff supervision, and LBCC Federal Work-Study students gain work experience. Based on a recent comparative analysis conducted by LBCC’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness, preliminary findings indicate that single-parent students who received the support of the on-site after-school program were more likely to enroll in more units and succeed at a higher rate than those who did not.
