Tavis D. Shields

Biography:
Tavis has been working in emergency services since 2005 as an EMT, Firefighter, Paramedic, and educator throughout West Central Wisconsin, and the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul metro region of Minnesota. He has spent almost 10 years at Century College working in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs specializing in skills and simulation-based education. Tavis has taken a collaborative approach to improving the educational experience of EMS students not only in the Century EMS programs, but also in partnership with the Northeast Metro 916 high school EMT program. By marrying his field experience with his background in Carrier Technical Education and Training (CTET), Tavis has worked with faculty and staff within Century College to build one of the most robust EMS labs in the region. He works to bring together the collective skills of those in the EMS department and throughout the college to improve the experience of the students that attend Century?s EMS programs whether they be Emergency Medical Responders (EMR), Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT), or Paramedics. His approach is systematic in nature and looks to align all aspects of the lab environment to ensure smooth operation whether it be organization of training equipment, high fidelity patient simulators, or simple task trainers. These efforts are successful because of the healthy team environment within the EMS program where passionate educators bring their collective skills and perspectives to create an environment of constant improvement.
