Biography:
Michelle Garcia is a biology professor and the Biology Department chair at Cuyamaca Community College, where she has dedicated 16 years to cultivating a passion for science among her students. Her contributions extend beyond the classroom, as she currently serves as the co-chair of the campus Student Success and Equity Council. Michelle's educational journey commenced at San Diego State University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, graduating summa cum laude and delivering the commencement speech as the top graduate in her class. During her undergraduate years, Michelle delved into research on global climate change in the arctic tundra, sparking a profound interest in the intricate workings of plants in their environment. Driven by her curiosity, Michelle pursued a Master's degree in Biology with a focus on genetic engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. It was during her time at Berkeley that she discovered her passion for teaching and science communication through her involvement in a biotechnology outreach program. Her professional journey includes roles in the biotech industry as an organic chemist and the pharmaceutical industry as a technical writer. These experiences have equipped her with a unique perspective, enriching her teaching approach and inspiring her students to appreciate the real-world applications of biology. Michelle's commitment to addressing equity gaps in education is reflected in her role as the Biology Department chair. She actively engages faculty in equity-minded pedagogical strategies, fostering a community of practice known as "Culturally Relevant Activities in Biology" (CRAB). This initiative seeks to create an inclusive learning environment by integrating diverse perspectives into biology education. Beyond her academic endeavors, Michelle is deeply connected to the local Kumeyaay Nation, whose land the college occupies. Her dedication to reducing disparities in education extends to collaborating with the Kumeyaay Community College to develop Kumeyaay Science courses and establish a Kumeyaay Village on campus. Michelle's innovative teaching approach, known as "MAT Science" (Modern and Traditional Science), intertwines scientific principles with the traditional knowledge of the Kumeyaay people, highlighting the cultural, medicinal, and utilitarian uses of plants. Mat is the Kumeyaay word for land. In addition to her impactful teaching and leadership roles, Michelle has played a pivotal role in the restoration of the college's nature preserve, incorporating indigenous Kumeyaay science practices. Last spring, the area witnessed its first cultural burn in over two centuries, a testament to Michelle's commitment to honoring and preserving the land. Michelle Garcia's journey as an educator, researcher, and advocate for equity has left an indelible mark on Cuyamaca Community College. Her efforts to bridge educational gaps and inspire students in STEM fields were duly recognized when she received the "Outstanding Faculty Award" at Cuyamaca College, an honor bestowed by faculty.
