CCTI Toolkit: Lehigh Carbon Community College

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS

Project Summary

The LCCC CCTI project consists of a two-pronged initiative. The first initiative is a professional development project for high school and community college STEM instructors. The program is based on the West-Ed, project known as the Strategic Literacy Initiative: Reading Apprenticeship (RA). This project provides one-week workshops for high school and college instructors in academic literacy in the content area. Teachers also receive on-going support through quarterly one-day workshops and most importantly the presence of a trainer-coordinator, whose primary role is to help the teachers with the implementation of the RA strategies and framework in their classrooms. We strongly believe that by improving students’ reading skills especially within their content areas, they will make greater achievement in their content area and in reading skills and thus reduce the need for remediation upon entering college. In addition to basic training we are also sending 5 teachers to West-Ed each year for advanced training so that they can increase our training base through turn-keying.

The second dimension of our initiative is to develop dual enrollment course(s) in the area of nanofabrication technology. At LCCC, nanofabrication technology encompasses biotechnology, chemical technology, electronics technology, optoelectronics and nanofabrication manufacturing technology. We believe the development of high quality dual enrollment courses for high school students will increase their opportunities to take courses not normally available to them; to earn college credit while still in high school; to encourage them to continue on to college, perhaps the community college and for careers in technology.
