Democratizing Our Data: Predictive Analytics and a Relational IR Model Support Student Success

The Middlesex Institutional Research and Assessment Department has transformed how our college uses research and predictive analytics to make data-informed decisions that directly impact student success. By moving from a transactional model of institutional research to a relationship-based model, we have achieved a democratization of our data. Together, we have integrated a set of key performance indicators called RISE—Register, Integrate, Succeed, and Employed—metrics to identify key trends, anticipate student needs, and tailor interventions to support diverse learners. This dynamic model allows us to go beyond static data, using real-time information and historical trends to predict at-risk students and personalize outreach efforts. Deans, department directors and chairs, faculty, advisors, and administrators now have access to the information necessary to proactively engage students, improving retention and equity outcomes. Through the efforts of our outstanding Institutional Research and Assessment Department, we are not just tracking success, we’re shaping it and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive.
