Welcome and Overview

Welcome to Getting Results. Whether you're a new or experienced teacher, you have a chance to make an impact on the future of the country. How can you be as effective as possible?

This multimedia resource for community college faculty will challenge your previous thinking about teaching and learning and give you the basic tools for effective classroom practice. The key theme of the course is to encourage you to focus on what the students will do and take responsibility for their success.

Teachers know their content and they know how to explain. These are valuable skills. But teachers have to become experts at tapping into their students' knowledge base and how they learn.

Taking the Course

Getting Results was designed with flexibility in mind. It may be used by a variety of users in varying situations. Here are some possible scenarios:

Working in Pairs or with a Group

This includes setting a schedule for reviewing and discussing modules and sharing your own experience and context. If a facilitator is available, this will help the process. PowerPoint summaries and PDF handouts are provided to support in-person use.

Working with Others in a Facilitated Online Course

The Getting Results course content can be used as the basis for a multi-week online professional development course.

Working Independently, Module by Module

This includes reading the content, watching the videos, completing the activities, and recording your thoughts and comments in a notebook. You should plan for it to take two to three hours per module.

Browsing for Content

This includes reviewing the overviews of each module and scanning the navigation. A video index and site map are also provided to see the content at a glance.

Using Your Notebook

You'll notice prompts instructing you to record your thoughts about specific content in a "notebook." This can be a pad of paper or word-processing document. It should be available to you as you proceed through the course, and you will be asked to refer back to it from time to time.

Facilitator Tips

We encourage the use of facilitators in this course. Here are suggestions for three possible settings:

  • A Face-to-Face Experience
In this scenario, please use the PDFs and PowerPoint outlines provided. A sample facilitator's guide is provided for you in Module 1. You can create a new one or adapt this one to your own setting.
  • Leading the Course Online
In this scenario, you will need to use a learning environment and make arrangements for discussion boards and assignments.
  • Working in a Hybrid
This scenario combines in-person work with online or Web-supported work. Plan in advance to use the Web site to enhance and extend the learning.

A Note About the Videos

Videos and examples in this course are drawn from specific community colleges, but we encourage facilitators to add their own examples and anecdotes and to ask their participants to connect the examples to their own settings.
