The security specialist ensures MCC’s information systems and computer networks are secure. This includes protecting MCC against hackers and cyber-attacks, as well as monitoring network traffic and server logs for activity that seems unusual. A security specialist is responsible for finding network and application based vulnerabilities, and ensuring that these threats are remediated. The security specialist investigates security breaches, develops strategies for any security issues that arise, and utilizes the help of firewalls, Security Information Event Management (SIEM) software and antivirus software to maintain security. The security specialist is responsible for educating and training MCC’s employees about security issues and on ways they can help keep their computer information secure and best practices on computer security. Security specialists may be called in on nights, weekends, and during emergencies. This position will report to the Chief Information Security Officer at Monroe Community College.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Identify unsuccessful and successful intrusion attempts by reviewing and analyzing security events logs and event summary information
  • Remediate malware through regular monitoring of Anti-Malware server consoles and endpoints
  • Coordinate Cyber-Security Awareness training, including development, maintenance of records, and presentation of information
  • Develop and maintain procedures for support of security standards by Help Desk and desktop support technicians.
  • Ensure the integrity and protection of networks; audit network security system to identify and protect areas of vulnerability
  • Administer campus firewalls as a member of the information security team
  • Monitor and configure Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS), firewalls and perimeter protection for potential, successful and unsuccessful intrusion attempts
  • Communicate intrusions and compromises to administration
  • Perform penetration testing against the college’s network and information systems
  • Perform vulnerability scans against systems, software and storage
  • Perform forensic analysis and investigation on any security breach
  • Analyze, verify, and document IT security issues relevant to MCC
  • Perform risk assessments on IT
  • Review change management process for new vulnerabilities
  • Provide technical leadership and implement project solutions to meet MCC’s objectives
  • Perform ongoing assessments of system baselines
  • Engage in self-directed learning of new network, system, voice and hardware technologies as the college embraces them
  • Available by cell phone and participate as a member of the on-call staff; perform tasks off hours, weekends, and holidays as needed to perform critical network upgrades

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field from a regionally accredited higher education institution
  • Minimum of five years of experience delivering security solutions to an enterprise
  • Strong understanding of general cybersecurity concepts
  • Experience in analyzing security logs generated by firewalls, IPS, servers, and syslog devices
  • Ability to work under pressure and pay close attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills and ability to present to groups of non-technical people
  • Familiarity with and ability to evaluate Cloud Service offerings
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt quickly to changing technology
  • Strong customer service skills


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications: Security +, CEH, CHFI, CISSP, GIAC, Cisco
  • Familiarity with Nmap, Retina, Nessus, Kali, and Identity Finder platforms
  • Experience with Cisco ASA and other firewall platforms
  • Experience performing analysis utilizing IPS
  • Experience performing security analysis utilizing SIEM technologies
  • Experience in PCI-DSS evaluations
  • Experience in Windows and Unix / Linux operating system security
  • Experience in assessing and securing software and application coding
