Range 18 ($9,033.99 – $14,485.37) per month based on the current Management Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement is commensurate with related experience and promotional rules. Applications are now being accepted for the position of Dean, School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, beginning July 1 at San Diego Mesa College.

While the current vacancy exists at San Diego Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.

The Dean, School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, reports to the Vice President of Instruction, and is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and advocating for all instructional programs in close cooperation with Department Chairs. This includes the coordination and supervision of class schedules, faculty teaching assignments, curriculum development, staff development, and budget planning. The Dean is involved in the hiring and evaluation of staff – both academic and classified. The Dean is expected to establish and maintain connections with relevant community and professional organizations as well as participate in college governance and decision making. The college is looking for an applicant who is a positive, collaborative, innovative, and energetic leader.

Major Responsibilities
• Provide effective leadership in the areas of planning and administering programs within the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The programs include: Accelerated College Program, Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, Oceanography, Physical Sciences and Physics.
• Work collaboratively with faculty, classified professionals, instructional laboratory technicians and academic leaders to develop long- and short-range goals for the school, including alignment with the college’s master plan, strategic plan, and other planning documents and processes.
• Work collaboratively with faculty, classified professionals, and academic leaders to support curriculum development and review at both the course and program levels.
• Work collaboratively with department chairs and administrators to hire, supervise, evaluate, support, and mentor all faculty and instructional laboratory technicians.
• Work collaboratively with department chairs and administrators to understand and utilize enrollment management strategies in schedule development and other aspects of school management.
• Conduct and support ongoing Program Review for the school.
• Understand and contribute to a college participatory governance structure and collective bargaining environment.
• Develop and maintain positive relationships with departments and schools across the campus, community and professional organizations.
• Apply local, state, and federal regulations, including preparing reports, to the College’s and School’s instructional programs, courses, laboratory safety, and activities.
• Knowledge of current state initiatives and legislative mandates, and programmatic challenges especially for mathematics education.
• Provide direct support to students as needed to resolve student concerns and make referrals as appropriate to college resources.
• Advocate for, coordinate, manage, and evaluate STEM programs, departments, disciplines and grants at the college, district, and community levels.
• Work collaboratively and transparently with the VPI and other administrative leaders.
• Promote and support policies, actions, and activities that foster an institutional culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.
• Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, classified professionals, and staff.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
In compliance with policies adopted by the Board of Trustees, applicants for
this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
1. Possession of a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited
institution; AND,
2. One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience
reasonably related to the administrator’s assignment.

Desired Qualifications
• PhD or terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution.
• Minimum of 3 years classroom teaching experience in a higher education setting.
• Demonstrated experience in related STEM fields, industry, or organizations.
• Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills including both oral and written communication.
• Demonstrated effective conflict resolution skills.
• Demonstrated skills in leading to high standards of STEM classroom and laboratory instruction and technologies.
• Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to diverse effective learning theories leading to student success that foster an institutional culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism.
• Demonstrated experience in educational leadership roles.
• Knowledge of and experience with the curriculum development process at the community college level.
• Demonstrated recognition of and experience in the vital and valuable role of STEM education across many different college programs.
• Experience with preparing and managing a departmental budget in a transparent way that meets the goals and objectives of programs and disciplines within the School.
• Experience with planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating academic programs, and advocating for future resource needs, including laboratory equipment and maintenance.
• Experience in developing relationships with high schools, transfer institutions, and industry partners to promote seamless pathways for students.
• Experience with the community college accreditation process.
• Knowledge of, experience with, and respect for working in a participatory governance environment.
• Demonstrated understanding and experience working in a collective bargaining environment.
• Demonstrated commitment to the missions and values of the California Community College System, the San Diego Community College System, and Mesa College.
