Adjunct Faculty, ESOL

Function of Position:

ESOL adjunct faculty prepare and teach ESOL courses in the ESOL/TRS department, develop new educational materials, and assist with the assessment of student learning as appropriate. Classes may be assigned at the Brighton and/or Downtown Campus (or other sites, as needed). Adjunct faculty report to the ESOL Program Coordinator and the ESOL/TRS Department Chair. The successful candidate will bring a passion for teaching an a desire to support and mentor MCC students as they pursue educational and career goals.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
•Demonstrates and maintains current subject knowledge
•Teaches courses and evaluates student performance in ESOL as per guidelines set by the department and Monroe Community College
•Teaches integrated or skill-specific English language courses for ESOL Program students
•Teaches course(s)/section(s) each term, as outlined by the contract and as available
•Prepares Course Information Sheet/Syllabus/Outlines and Course Calendar in accordance with ESOL Program and College guidelines
•Establishes and maintains an engaging, supportive, well-managed classroom environment that encourages students' participation
•Provides students with assistance, guidance, and encouragement during class and office hours
•Maintains student attendance records, grades, proficiency exams, and other records as requested by the ESOL Program and/or College and submits them in a timely manner
•Utilizes Blackboard to enhance course content and record student grades
•Assists with student retention and completion initiatives including completing early alerts and assisting students during the advisement process
•Evaluates student performance as per guidelines set by the ESOL Program
•Develops innovative teaching pedagogy to facilitate learning
•Actively engages in pedagogical and TESOL professional development to stay knowledgeable of current issues and best practices related to TESOL
•Demonstrates excellent time management skills, and the ability to prioritize workflow, multi-task, and communicate in a timely manner
•Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Program Coordinator and/or ESOL/TRS Department Chair, as appropriate

Required Qualifications:
•Earned master's degree in TESOL, or a closely related field with a TESOL certificate, from a regionally accredited higher education institution
•Minimum one year of ESOL classroom teaching experience
•Ability to teach courses within the department
•Evidence of effective English communication skills (interpersonal, speaking, and writing)
•Evidence of respect for and understanding of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs
•Commitment to the philosophy of a comprehensive community college
•Evidence of proficiency with technology
•Commitment to professional growth

Preferred Qualifications:
•ESOL teaching experience at the college or high school level, or in an intensive English program
•Experience teaching intermediate or advanced level reading and writing
•Cross-cultural experience, such as study or work abroad experience, and/or basic fluency in another language
•Knowledge of, or experience in, implementing a variety of teaching strategies
•Experience and/or interest in developing and teaching online courses
•Experience with computerized student record management
