Math-On-Demand: Supporting Students Where They Are

A professor, along with her colleagues in the School of Mathematics and Science at Community College of Baltimore County, has created an on-demand math tutoring program that meets students where they are. Math-On-Demand (MOD) is an asynchronous service with course-specific group chats through GroupMe, a free platform that can be accessed on any device at any time. Students access the chat and can post text and images of math problems they want help with. Some students have gotten assistance from volunteer faculty tutors in under five minutes using MOD. This innovation is free and can readily be replicated in other departments and at other institutions to support a wide range of students who have busy schedules and need assistance beyond times when traditional tutoring programs are offered. MOD provides several benefits: Faculty volunteers can interact with students at times when they are available and students can conveniently post questions any time they are struggling. Students have expressed gratitude for the availability of the service. MOD has been so well received that there are plans to add a Biology-On-Demand in fall 2024.
