In July 2007, the Foothill-De Anza Community College District in Los Altos Hills, California, with the support of the League for Innovation, launched the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER at http://cccoer.wordpress.com/). CCCOER’s purpose is to identify, create, and/or repurpose required course content as Open Textbooks and make them available for use by community college students and faculty in America and globally.

Open Textbooks. The first open textbook, Collaborative Statistics, is now freely available under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license for use by community college statistics professors at http://cnx.org/content/col10522/latest/. More open textbooks are now being identified for use in the months and years ahead. As CCCOER develops and more open textbooks are created, located, and used by community college professors, more information will be added to this website.

Consortium Membership. Currently, more than 80 community colleges are members of CCCOER. Community colleges are encouraged to participate in the consortium by

• Becoming members of the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources;
• Encouraging other community colleges to join the CCCOER;
• Participating in the next OER survey;
• Sharing what they are already doing in terms of promoting open textbooks and OER on their campuses;
• Providing the Community College Open Textbook Project with faculty volunteers to review open textbooks;
• Identifying OER advocates on their own campuses to serve as the faculty liaison between the Community College Open Textbook Project and faculty on their own campuses;
• Encouraging their faculty to visit the CCCOER website to complete the tutorials and training available at no cost; and
• Providing release time and/or professional development leave for faculty to develop open textbooks and OER.

League Board institutions Anne Arundel Community College, Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, Kirkwood Community College, Monroe Community College, San Diego Community College District, Sinclair Community College, and the Seattle Community College District are members of CCCOER, as are many League Alliance members.
