As a leader of the Northwest North Carolina Advanced Materials Cluster, Wilkes Community College thinks globally to reach out locally for economic development. Find out the steps the Cluster is taking to foster a sustainable regional economy and the role higher education institutions must play to make it happen.

Learning abstractsLearning Abstracts. First-Year Experience Program by Sylvia Jenkins and Joann Wright. Moraine Valley Community College helps students achieve and succeed from the start with its First-Year Experience (FYE) program. A collegewide collaboration, FYE is designed to create a comprehensive, integrated experience for all first-time, full-time students, and more than 550 faculty and administrators have completed the training required for FYE instructors. Learn more about this award-winning program and the significant impact it has on student achievement, in the October issue of Learning Abstracts.

Innovations showcaseInnovation Showcase. Community Cruises to College: Upstate New York College Hosts Second Annual Cruise Night by Donna Rae Sutherland. Car, truck, and bike admirers have lots of fun at Genesee Community College’s Cruise at the College. In its second year, the exhibition expanded to include decked out trikes and radio-controlled aircraft, helping fuel the college’s student transportation fund and drive up the number of summertime campus visitors.
