Organizational Culture Symposium: Cindy Miles, President, Hialeah Campus, Miami Dade College, FL, facilitates a conversation about organizational culture with Clarice Somersall, Vice President, Learning and Academic Effectiveness, Montgomery College, MD; Luke Robins, Chancellor, Louisiana Delta Community College, LA; and Terry Calaway, President, Johnson County Community College, KS.

Learning Environments Symposium: Allatia Harris, Director, Academic Initiatives, Dallas County Community College District, TX, facilitates a conversation about various kinds of learning environments, with Sylvia Jenkins, Dean, Academic Development and Learning Resources, Moraine Valley Community College, IL; Dan Bain, President, Independence Community College, KS; and Dana Grove, Executive Vice President, Academic Affairs, Johnson County Community College, KS.

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Symposium Speakers: Celeste Fenton, Director, Professional Development and Web Services, and Brenda Ward Watkins, Curriculum Designer, Hillsborough Community College, FL, are recipients of the 2007-2008 Cross Papers Fellowship, and in this session lead a conversation based in part on their monograph, Learner-Centered Assessment: Real Strategies for Today’s Students, The Cross Papers, Number 11.

Student Engagement Symposium Speakers: Arleen Arnsparger, Project Manager, MetLife Foundation Initiative on Student Success, Community College Survey of Student Engagement, University of Texas at Austin, TX, facilitates a conversation on student engagement with Leann Ellis, Vice President, Academic Affairs, Butler Community College, KS, and Allen Goben, President, Hazard Community and Technical College, KY.

Inquiry and Accountability Symposium Speakers: Jeff Seybert, Director, Ralph Juhnke, Senior Research Analyst, Pat Sumner, Information Analyst, and Gina Brewer, Market and Survey Research Analyst, Office of Institutional Research, Johnson County Community College, KS, discuss two national data sharing and reporting consortia designed and implemented for community colleges: The Kansas Study of Community College Instructional Costs and Productivity and the National Community College Benchmark Project. The conversation includes examples of national aggregate summary data as well as an institutional perspective on the use of national comparative benchmark data for accreditation, accountability, and improvement.

Now in its sixth year, the League’s Learning College Summit brings together community and technical college educators who are committed to a deliberate, powerful focus on learning at their institutions. In a small conference center hotel set in the verdant Corporate Woods of Overland Park, the 2008 Learning College Summit will serve as a working retreat for college teams or individuals to connect with colleagues, share experiences, discuss issues, and explore strategies for overcoming obstacles and meeting challenges. This gathering of educators is designed to foster networking and collaborative opportunities, and is a vehicle for investigating ways colleges have successfully undertaken significant organizational transformation to improve student learning.

The 2008 Learning College Summit will devote one half day to each of the following focus areas:

Opening Reception
Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art
Johnson County Community College

The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art is on the campus of the Learning College Summit host institution, Johnson County Community College, located approximately one mile from the Doubletree Hotel Overland Park-Corporate Woods. Complimentary shuttle service between the hotel and museum will begin immediately following the Opening General Session and will continue throughout the reception. Tours of the Johnson County Community College campus will also be available during the reception.

A Taste of Kansas City:
Kansas City BBQ Crawl

Join our hosts and the Summit staff for a taste of Kansas City, barbecue style! Kansas City is famous for its barbecue, and our Learning College Summit hosts from Johnson County Community College have arranged an evening of fun, flavor, and experiential learning, with the intended outcome that Summit participants will understand and appreciate why KC BBQ is considered by many to be the best barbecue in the world.

The $27 price includes transportation by motor coach; a delicious barbecue meal served in stages, buffet or family style, at three renowned Kansas City barbecue restaurants; and a t-shirt to certify your achievement of BBQ Crawl outcomes!

The motor coach will depart from the Doubletree Hotel Overland Park-Corporate Woods at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10. Participants will spend approximately 30 minutes at each of three BBQ restaurants, with one-third of the BBQ meal served at each restaurant: Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue, Fiorella’s Jack Stack-Freight House, and Joe’s 101 (AKA Smoking Joe’s BBQ).

Summit participants will have complimentary shuttle service to restaurant-row areas in the vicinity of the Doubletree Hotel Overland Park-Corporate Woods. Summit participants and their families or other guests are free to take advantage of this shuttle service. Please see the program on site for specific times and routes.
