Look What’s Coming to iStream in January:
Focus on Service Learning

This month, iStream focuses on the importance of service learning and the many ways in which its incorporation into the curriculum improves communities while bringing about enhanced learning and rewarding careers for students. For information about how your college can access the wealth of resources in iStream, visit www.league.org/istream or contact Wendy Neil (neil@league.org or 480-705-8200, ext 234).

Thoughtful Topics. Richland College’s job assistance programs and language services have redefined service learning, but the success doesn’t end there. Listen to President Stephen Mittelstet’s discussion of strategies for excellence that led to national recognition.

Partner Spotlight. History and political science instructor Michael E. Long highlights growing historical preservation initiatives at community colleges in this NISOD abstract. Through these programs, students get field experience at parks, museums, and government agencies, enabling them to enrich the community while they enrich themselves.

Project Highlights. Cuyahoga Community College fosters communication skills for its international students, grants real-world experience for technical college recording arts students, and teaches lessons in diversity to elementary school students through storytelling in this innovative project.

Ten Questions. Find out the latest advances in service learning and learn about the development and benefits of Cuyahoga Community College’s Center for Community Research from a veteran anthropology professor. You’ll hear what makes community college teaching and learning remarkable when Mark Lewine answers Ten Questions.
