2007 Learning College Summit Call for Proposals

The League invites proposals for forum sessions at the fifth annual Learning College Summit to be held June 24-27, 2007, at the Dallas Hilton Lincoln Centre in Dallas, Texas. The deadline for submitting proposals is February 28, 2007. Click here to submit a proposal online.

Now in its fifth year, the League's 2007 Learning College Summit is being hosted by Dallas County Community College District. Plans are fully under way for this exciting gathering, which brings together educators from around the nation and world who are committed to a deliberate, powerful focus on learning at their institutions. As an integral facet of the League's Learning Initiative, the Learning College Summit is designed to benefit colleges that are beginning the journey toward becoming more learning centered as well as veteran learning-college institutions that are well on their way.

In a small conference center setting, the 2007 Learning College Summit will serve as a working retreat for college teams or for individual representatives from colleges to connect with colleagues and to share experiences, discuss issues, and explore strategies for overcoming obstacles and meeting challenges. This gathering of community college educators is designed to foster networking and collaborative opportunities among colleagues, and is a vehicle to investigate ways colleges have successfully undertaken significant organizational transformation to improve student learning.

The 2007 Learning College Summit offers participants opportunities to explore in depth five pressing topics in community college education as they relate to the Learning College concept in action:

  • Quality Enhancement;
  • Learning Outcomes and Assessment;
  • Learning Environments;
  • Student Engagement; and 
  • Professional Development.

Each topic is the focus of deep examination during its own morning or afternoon session. Each session features a symposium, forums, and conversations about learning.

Symposium. Each half-day session begins with a plenary symposium focused on the topic for that session. Each symposium features a discussion by leaders and practitioners in the specific topic area, followed by a question-and-answer period involving Summit participants. Participants are encouraged not only to ask questions of the speakers, but also to share brief descriptions of ways their colleges are working to make that aspect of their institution more learning centered.

Forums. Held concurrently, the forums for each half-day session follow the symposium and feature a team of two or three participants from one or more institutions presenting successful approaches to achieving educational transformation in the topic area. Presenters provide specific examples of successful strategies and practices used at their college. The deadline for submitting proposals to present a forum is February 28, 2007.

Conversations About Learning. Each half-day session ends with conversations about learning designed to provide college teams the opportunity to regroup and reflect on their experiences at the Summit and to begin discussing ways to apply their learning at their college. Teams may choose to use this time to meet with other college teams and/or individuals. For participants who are the sole representative from their institution, these conversations offer an opportunity to continue symposium and forum dialogues and to discuss challenges, obstacles, and successes with others. Individuals may also choose to use this time for meeting with specific college teams and/or individuals.

The 2007 Learning College Summit has the following goals:

  • Provide a comfortable setting for educators to share the successes and challenges of transforming institutions to become more powerfully focused on learning.
  • Increase understanding of the concepts of the Learning College as a framework and inspiration for affecting institutional change to improve student learning, performance, and success.
  • Provide a forum for the exchange of innovative processes and approaches to transforming undergraduate education and improving institutional student outcomes.
  • Facilitate participant interaction and development of new networks of colleagues who support Learning College concepts.

Conference on Information Technology

Preparations are under way for the 2007 Conference on Information Technology, to be held at the Nashville Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, November 11-14. The Tennessee Board of Regents System will serve as host for the 23rd annual event to explore the intelligent application of information technology in community and technical colleges.

Nashville boasts a mild climate year round with some of the most beautiful and vibrant foliage in the country. Quote 2Each year CIT’s Track One focuses on an emerging technology of particular interest to educators. For the 2007 CIT, Track One features Portable High-Tech Media Devices and Their Implications for Instruction. The growing consumer use of MP3 players, PDAs, cell phones, and other portable high-tech media devices raises questions about their role in improving student learning and student access to learning. How does the use of these devices change the dynamics of teaching and learning? Does instructional content linked to these devices now make them an additional de facto student purchase? How is instructional success defined and measured when using these devices? Proposals targeted toward this focus area should focus on the evaluation, adaptation, and use of portable high-tech media devices for academic purposes. Although the increased use of portable high-tech media devices is the special focus of the 2007 CIT, other proposal topics related to the emerging and future use of information technology at community and technical colleges are strongly encouraged.

Monterey Institute for Technology and Education
Offers Free Course Evaluations

The Monterey Institute for Technology and Education (MITE) is once again offering free course evaluations, a $1,200 value, to organizations committed to quality online course development. Through an RFP process, 10 courses will be selected to receive a complete evaluation through the Online Course Evaluation Process (OCEP). This process involves using a team of evaluators to look at the scope, scholarship, and instructional design, as well as pedagogical and production values of each course. The results of these evaluations will be posted at WCET’s Edutools website, www.edutools.info.

If you have created a high-quality online course and are committed to continuous course improvement, you won’t want to miss this opportunity. Your course will be evaluated by impartial professionals who will provide you with an objective overview of over 52 elements of your course. Terry O'Banion Student Technology Awards


The League for Innovation and Microsoft invite League Alliance institutions to nominate two outstanding community college technology students for the Terry O'Banion Student Technology Awards. The winners of these awards will be determined through a national search of nominations from League for Innovation member colleges. The awards - each in the amount of $5,000, plus copies of Microsoft software programs - will be presented to two students with special talent and interest in a career in technology who also demonstrate a need for financial assistance in meeting their career goals. Community college faculty or staff members are invited to nominate student candidates by returning the nomination form accompanied by a 500-word letter of recommendation. The Center for the Advancement of the Education of Adults
2006–2007: The Future of the Education of Adults

Call for Research Proposals

The Center for the Advancement of the Education of Adults was created to catalyze improved practice in the education of adults. We accomplish this by enabling researchers and practitioners to study and disseminate the most imaginative, effective designs for curriculum, and most powerful strategies for teaching and mentoring adults. The theme for the Center for the Advancement of the Education of Adults for the upcoming academic year is “The Future of the Education of Adults.” This broad scope is capable of accommodating a multitude of related topics. 

Award Overview. Grants will be made available, on a competitive basis, to researchers and practitioners. To be considered, a proposal must focus on the future, emphasizing change toward improved practice; address the education of adults by focusing on topics such as technology and learning, new millennium students, globalization, changing roles of educators in academic and other settings, challenges and opportunities for the education of adults in academic, corporate and/or community settings, fostering collaboration within the academic environment and between the academic environment and the larger world, education of adults and service learning, poverty, literacy and the education of adults; propose a publishable report of demonstration application; and present research findings at the annual conference organized by the Center. The Center for the Advancement of the Education of Adults complies with the principles of the DePaul University Institutional Review Board. 

Description of Award. The Center for the Advancement of the Education of Adults will make ten awards in the amount of $1,200 each. One half of the award will be paid upon acceptance of the award offer. The second half will be paid upon the completion of a finished paper, and presentation of that paper at a conference to be hosted by the Center in February of 2008.

Uncovering the Heart of Higher Education

heartIn our densely interconnected world, integrative teaching and learning have never been more important, but in what components of their studies and in what dimensions of themselves are students being asked to make connections? We understand integration within a major, between fields, and even between knowledge and practice. More recently, the relationship between curricular and co-curricular activities has received attention. While these and other trends help students and faculty integrate otherwise fragmentary elements of their educational venture, do we go far enough? Do our efforts reach the often unspoken heart of higher education?

The central questions become, Do current higher education efforts address the whole human being - mind, heart, and spirit - in ways that contribute best to our future on this fragile planet? What steps can we take to make our community colleges, colleges, and universities places that awaken the deepest potential in students, faculty, and staff?

After two years of dialogue and planning, The Fetzer Institute and California Institute of Integral Studies are sponsoring a major conference in San Francisco on February 22–25, 2007, for the field of higher education. Uncovering the Heart of Higher Education will focus on integrative learning for compassionate action in an interconnected world. Conference partners include the Associated New American Colleges, Association of American Colleges and Universities, Council of Independent Colleges, League for Innovation in the Community College, and National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.

Targeted to faculty, administrators, student life professionals, and chaplains, the conference will address the relationships between curriculum and values; intellectual, aesthetic, and moral intelligences; technical competency and compassionate action; critical reasoning and contemplative inquiry; and vocation and life purpose. The rising interest in integrative learning supports a holistic approach to education that is founded on a growing recognition of the need for students to integrate their inner lives and their outer vocations. One aim of the conference is to draw together and articulate teaching perspectives from around the world that are theoretical, pedagogical, and relational. Tracks of inquiry will include contemplation, spirituality, and religion in higher education; integration of emotional and academic intelligence; cross-cultural competency, integrative learning communities, learning through work and service, leading from within, and the major trends in research.

With the rigor of traditional academic conferences, leading faculty, administrators, and student life professionals will present and explore best teaching practices as well as theoretical frameworks for programs, courses, and activities that will explore, promote, and cultivate a balanced education of heart, mind, and spirit, and a need to work in the world. At the same time, this conference will gather leading and diverse voices from across the country to share their journeys as educators.

Keynote speakers will include Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker; educational activist and author Parker Palmer; Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela of the University of Cape Town and author of A Human Being Died That Night; Robert Kegan, developmental psychologist at Harvard University and author of The Evolving Self; Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran, president of Kalamazoo College; Steve Mittelstet, president of Richland College; Diana Chapman Walsh, president of Wellesley College; Alexander and Helen Astin, co-directors of the Templeton Project on Spirituality in Higher Education. The conference includes five preconference institutes, 50 sessions, and four site visits in San Francisco.

“The Career Pathways How-To Guide” Now Available

The Workforce Strategy Center (WSC) announces the publication of “The Career Pathways How-To Guide,” the second in a series of reports by WSC on career pathways, an innovative, increasingly popular means for aligning educational, workforce, and economic development systems to strengthen local and regional economies. 

This report is a practitioner's guide to implementing career pathways on the local level and emphasizes how state-level officials can support these efforts. Written by Davis Jenkins and Christopher Spence, the guide walks readers through a five-stage approach to building successful regional career pathways partnerships, citing examples from state leaders including Arkansas, California, Kentucky, Ohio, Oregon, and Washington. The report draws on WSC's firsthand experience assisting cities, regions, and states across the U.S.  

The guide follows the first report, “Career Pathways: Aligning Public Resources to Support Individual and Regional Economic Advancement in the Knowledge Economy.” In the next few weeks, WSC will release a third report describing how state policymakers can support effective economic and workforce development. All of these reports were made possible with generous support from the Joyce Foundation.

Diversity, Engagement, Technology, and Civil Discourse

A TLT Group Online Seminar 

How can faculty weave together diversity, academic engagement, and technology without asking too much of themselves or their students? What kinds of diversity matter most when we strive to use technology to engage learners and teachers more actively and effectively with course content and with each other? How can we foster more civil, constructive interaction in this context?   

During the past five years, diversity has increased greatly among college and university students, faculty, administration, and other stakeholder constituencies. We recognize the influence of many dimensions of diversity: socioeconomic status, cultural heritage, race, ethnicity, age, learning goals, teaching goals, familiarity with computing and other information technologies. Beliefs about the purposes of education, experience in college, and family traditions about advanced education also contribute to the mix.

As the conversation about diversity widens to include the multiple characteristics that make us each who we are, new technology options are arriving faster than ever, bringing with them the potential to meet the needs and take advantage of the gifts of increasingly diverse students and faculty. They also bring, however, the potential to widen gaps and impede meaningful communication.

Conditions, pressures, and options today make it more important, more possible, and more difficult to deal effectively with diversity in learning styles and working styles. Faculty often concentrate much more on curriculum than on how students engage with the course content. In an age where there is too much to do and too little time, technology actually gives us a vehicle for meeting these challenges. To do that, though, we must first find ways of talking civilly about the hot topics among a diverse, often passionate and over-worked, group of stakeholders who may have conflicting goals. The TLT Group invites you to join this exploration through conversations about diversity, engagement, technology, and civil discourse.

Leader/Presenters: Steve Gilbert, TLT Group, and Naomi Story, Mesa Community College, with special guests  This workshop addresses these central questions: 

  • Help wanted. What kinds of help do faculty members want and need to more comfortably, effectively help engage diverse students academically, especially when using information technology?
  • Constructive, civil actions/discussions. How can anyone deal constructively and civilly with these interrelated challenges? How does this challenge connect with Art Chickering’s recent ideas about authenticity? 
  • Identify differences and commonalities. Isn't one of the most important first steps to enable the group to recognize, articulate, and respect their important differences and commonalities? How can this be accomplished? Who is responsible? 
  • Students' perceptions. How are students' perceptions of course content influenced by their own cultural background? By their teacher's? By other ways in which they differ from each other?
  • Newer faculty different. Are newer, often younger, faculty members better than older faculty at perceiving, respecting, and dealing with differences in students within a traditional classroom? Is age the most important dimension of difference among faculty for this purpose? 
  • Cultural differences online. In what ways are differences among students and faculty more or less challenging in a purely online environment or hybrid course?

What Psychology and Neuroscience
Teach Us About Organizational Change

According to the May 2005 issue of Fast Company, here's what new insights from psychology and neuroscience have to teach us about organizational change:

  • Real change isn't motivated by either crisis or fear. The best inspiration comes from leaders who can create compelling and positive visions of the future.
  • Small, gradual changes rarely lead to transformation. Radical, sweeping changes are riskier but often more effective, because they quickly yield benefits visible to everyone.
  • Narratives, not facts, guide our thinking. Data on declining market share or quality problems won't get employees to change what they do. Rather, appeals rooted in emotion are what best inspire people to alter course.

iStream: Focus on Innovative Science

Subscribers to iStream have access to League conference keynote speeches and selected other sessions, League print and electronic publications, and a variety of other focused content for staff and organizational development. This month’s special focus is innovative science, and the following list highlights special features and new content for December.

Project Highlight. Heavenly bodies, earthly structures, and the multiplicity of life forms are now on display within the Circle of Science at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida.

10 Questions to Leadership. Wanda Ward, Acting Assistant Director for the Directorate for Education and Human Resources at the National Science Foundation (NSF), surveys the leadership role the NSF plays in promoting science education in the nation’s schools.

TLT Webinars, Dangerous Discussions, and Flashlight. The League and TLTGroup are happy to present numerous workshops and three TLT workshop archives. The next two FridayLive! Events will be on Dec 2 (Web 2.0 Technologies) and Dec 15 (The MIT-Microsoft iCampus Alliance). Further, a new workshop on Diversity, Engagement, Technology, and Civil Discourse, in January, opens discussions on how educators can find new ways to talk civilly about the many dimensions of diversity. Getting Results Faculty Development Modules

Getting resultsGetting Results, a free, online, multimedia professional development course for training community college faculty, produced by WGBH-TV in association with the League, is available online at no cost (http://www.league.org/gettingresults), and a CD version is available for purchase through the League Store (http://www.leaguestore.org).

The modules focus on the teaching of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, specifically in Advanced Technology Education classrooms. The videos accompanying the modules include real teachers and students in real classroom settings across the country, representing a range of fields, institutions, programs, and subject areas.

Suitable for self-study, face-to-face training, or other formats of online and onsite use, Getting Results gives faculty members strategies for deepening teaching and learning. Extensive curriculum is now available online at no charge at http://www.league.org/gettingresults. Free downloadable PDF versions of web-based text and PowerPoint outlines are included with each module. A CD-ROM version that does not require internet access is available for purchase ($29 price includes standard shipping) from the League Store at http://www.leaguestore.org.

Getting Results begins with an orientation video followed by six modules. Each module features classroom videos illustrating classroom practice; background information about the teacher and class; activities for learners; readings; downloadable, printable PDF versions of web-based text content; customizable PowerPoint slide shows; and suggestions on how to incorporate the strategies into users’ own classrooms. The module topics are

  • Creating a Community of Learners;
  • Planning for Outcomes;
  • Active Teaching and Learning;
  • Moving Beyond the Classroom;
  • Teaching with Technology; and 
  • Assessing Teaching and Learning.

Funded by the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technology Education (ATE) Program, Getting Results was produced by WGBH-TV, PBS’s flagship station, in association with the League for Innovation in the Community College. Getting Results draws on research about best practices in adult learning. It has been piloted at 13 community and technical colleges, and the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) at the University of Texas at Austin is conducting a formative and summative evaluation through 2007.

Case Studies From the College and Career Transitions Initiative

Pathways to Student Success is a product of the League’s College and Career Transitions Initiative (CCTI), funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education. The book includes 15 case studies from CCTI site partnerships on topics including education and training; information technology; law, public safety, and security; science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; and health science. CCTI’s purpose is to strengthen the call of community and technical colleges in easing student transitions between secondary and postsecondary education and improving academic performance at both the secondary and postsecondary levels, and the case studies in this publication demonstrate ways community colleges are working to fulfill that purpose. Member Spotlight: Norwalk Community College

Insurance and Financial Services Industry Job Training Initiative

Norwalk, Connecticut

Governor M. Jodi Rell recently announced that Connecticut’s insurance and financial services industry will get a boost from a federal grant which targets workforce training for key occupations to ensure that supply meets demand. Norwalk Community College is part of a Connecticut partnership which has received the $2.748 million President’s High Growth Job Training Initiative Grant. This educational partnership will create IFS University and develop a curriculum and training for the insurance and financial services industry over the next three years.

The grant was announced earlier this fall by U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao at a press conference at Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury. In addition to NCC, the partnership includes Capital Community College in Hartford, the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), and the Insurance and Financial Services Cluster. The Workplace Inc., a Stamford-based regional workforce development board, will serve as administrator and fiduciary for the project.

The grant will provide funds for Norwalk Community College and Capital Community College to provide direct training in four critical occupations: Financial Managers and Analysts, Accountants and Auditors, Financial Sales Agents and Brokers, and Actuaries. These occupations are projected to grow and require ongoing skill enhancement.

Norwalk Community College will focus primarily on workforce training for the financial services industry. Capital Community College will develop training for the insurance industry.

David l. levinson“Through this grant, Norwalk Community College will help ensure a highly skilled workforce in Fairfield County, a region with an intense concentration of banks and companies engaged in asset management and other financial services,” said NCC President David L. Levinson. “We have an outstanding opportunity to help Connecticut remain competitive.”

According to Gov. Rell, Connecticut has the highest concentration of financial analysts, actuaries, and underwriters in the nation. The insurance and financial services industry is a primary economic driver across the state, with more than 140,000 jobs representing 8 percent of Connecticut’s labor market.

The grant provides funding through the U.S. Department of Labor to develop a curriculum which will provide skills training required to enter into and advance in the four occupational areas. The project will develop the first Associate in Science Degree in Insurance and Financial Services to be offered at the community college level in Connecticut. After the new curriculum is completed, 400 people are expected to be trained within the initial grant period.

The Insurance and Financial Services Cluster is led by industry and supported by civic, educational, and government institutions, whose primary purpose is to create a formal structure for the industry to cooperate and collaborate on issues and concerns of mutual interest that impact the business community.
