Student Art Competition 1997-1998

The winners of the 1997-98 Student Art competition, hosted by Lane Community College, and coordinated by Craig Spilman, were  announced in the spring. 

The First Place "Best of Show" award and Judge’s Purchase Award were presented to Ben Jensen, Kirkwood Community College, for a salt-fired stoneware titled "Scaled Vase"; the Second Place award was won by Megan Schroder, Seattle Community College District, for a charcoal and conte titled "Self Portrait: On the Face of Things"; and Third Place awards were presented to Elizabeth Check, Cuyahoga Community College, for digital photography titled "One Way"; Claire Erickson, Lane Community College, for a bronze titled "Inside Out"; and Annie Hancock, Seattle Community College District, for an acrylic titled "Self Portrait." Honorable Mentions were awarded to Olga P. Karsakova, Dallas County Community College District, Brookhaven College, for an untitled ceramic
sculpture; Matt Markey, Johnson County Community College, for a charcoal and conte titled "No More Bad Dreams"; and Jennifer Adams, Maricopa Community Colleges, for an untitled sculpture, plaster, paint, gold

George Johanson, an internationally recognized
artist/painter, who taught painting, drawing, and
printmaking at the Pacific Northwest College of Art from 1955 until 1980 where he retired as a teacher, judged this year’s competition. His work has been shown both nationally and internationally and is represented in public
collections including the Art Institute of Chicago; The National Collection, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.; and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England.

Lane Community College has prepared a catalog of all works submitted. The 1998-99 competition will be hosted by Central Piedmont Community College and coordinated by Pauline Lamal.
