Leveraging Community Colleges
for Homeland
Security
The vision
of the League for Innovation in the Community College is the
systematic leveraging of community colleges and their position
in civic engagement, service learning, and community programs to
serve the education and training needs of Homeland Security.
The purpose of the League for Innovation in the Community
College's Homeland Security Initiative is to explore the scope
of Homeland Security programs in community colleges, look to the
future in regard to collaboration and connection to national
efforts, and examine the role of community colleges in
Homeland Security. Through its various efforts, the League
for Innovation in the Community College will facilitate
activities designed to identify existing community college
Homeland Security preparedness and prevention programs,
services, and resources on campuses; unmet needs; and possible
barriers to the development of Homeland Security programs in
community colleges. Given that
(1) our tax dollars already support community colleges, (2)
their training generally leads to career and academically
portable credentials, (3) their footprint touches almost every
community in the nation, and (4) they already deliver
high-stakes training that leads to nationally recognized
certification, it makes sense to foster a focused strategy to
leverage community colleges. This strategy will serve policy and
decision makers well as they take further steps to protect our
communities. |
