Project Summary Ivy Tech Community College, Columbus in collaboration with C4: Columbus Area Career Connection and Columbus Regional Hospital will develop comprehensive and academically rigorous career pathways for students in the field of health sciences. These pathways provide students the opportunity to take part in several credit-based transition programs while simultaneously receiving extensive work-based learning opportunities. Our current focus is a career pathway leading traditional and adult students to an Associate of Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology at Ivy Tech, with the opportunity to further their education at a four-year institution. High school students will earn a diploma with academic or technical honors and will take part in C4’s Health Careers program. Once enrolled, students select from several specialties including Central Service Technician. These professionals are responsible for the preparation and packaging of all materials and instruments used throughout the hospital. Completion of this program, involving intense training at Columbus Regional Hospital, will qualify them to become professionally certified by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM). A clear link is seen between this profession and that of a Surgical Technician and other careers in health sciences. All levels of training will lead to a profession that is in high demand offering competitive wages.
