Learning Communities for Developmental Students

An external evaluation of Houston Community College’s learning communities by MDRC showed that students enrolled in the learning communities—particularly Hispanic students—were more likely to pass developmental math than students enrolled in stand-alone courses. Sixty-four percent of Hispanic students enrolled in the learning communities completed the course with a grade of C or better compared with 48% in stand-alone developmental math courses. In addition, learning community students enrolled in the next math class in the sequence at higher rates. The greatest impacts of the learning communities occurred for students who entered college with the lowest math placement scores.
