“You, as members of the League, have chosen the road less traveled, and yes, it is indeed the road less certain, but it is the best road to be on.”
Kweisi Mfume, President & CEO,
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
(NAACP)

“The League for Innovation is the most vital organization in higher education today”

Ted Marchese,
Veteran Executive Editor, Change Magazine

“I was asked to justify the cost of Alliance membership to our budget committee. It was easy! We saved over $600 alone in registration fees for the League’s two annual conferences. Plus, we received seven free monographs this year. It’s hard to find this kind of value elsewhere.”
Jacquelyn Belcher, President, Georgia Perimeter College

“Our membership in the League Alliance has been very beneficial to our learning programs. Our teachers and our support staff appreciate the steady stream of reputable ideas and innovations. The League’s conferences are the absolute best, always receiving the highest rankings from our staff.”
G. Jeremiah Ryan, President, Raritan Valley Community College

“The League is the birthplace of cutting-edge ideas that make community colleges even better.”
Mary L. Fifield, President, Bunker Hill Community College

“Joining the League Alliance is a smart move for any community college committed to innovation and excellence. Our membership provides direct access to knowledgeable and trusted colleagues, web resources, and publications and research that help inform the way we serve our students.”
Leonardo de la Garza, Chancellor, Tarrant County College District

About the League

The League for Innovation is an international association committed to catalyzing the potential of the community college movement. With a 32-year history of making a difference in community college education, the League has been called "the most dynamic organization in the community college world" (Change).

Activities

The League provides online resources, services, and connections for community colleges; produces conferences, workshops, seminars, and institutes; publishess and disseminates books, monographs, abstracts, newsletters, resource directories, surveys, and special reports; and serves as an international leader in initiating, implementing, and coordinating special projects focused on innovative practices in the community college.

League Initiatives

Current League activities are centered around four broad League initiatives: Learning, Leadership, Information Technology, and Workforce.

Learning Initiative: The League leads efforts to develop more learning-centered community colleges by helping them develop policies, programs, and practices that place learning at the heart of the educational enterprise. Examples of activities for this initiative include the recent monographs Learning Outcomes for the 21st Century: Report of a Community College Study, To Teach with Soft Eyes: Reflections on a Teacher/Leader Formation Experience, and Collaborative Learning 101: The Cross Papers      Number 4; the bimonthly Learning Abstracts series; and Innovations, an annual conference dedicated to improving student and organizational learning through innovation, experimentation, and institutional transformation. Activities planned for the coming year include the development of a community of colleges dedicated to transforming their institutions into Learning Colleges for the 21st Century.

Leadership Initiative : To help prepare and support community college leaders, the League offers the Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) for senior-level administrators preparing for the community college presidency. In addition, the League cosponsors the National Institute for Leadership Development (NILD) to help prepare women for leadership positions in community colleges. The League also publishes Leadership Abstracts, a bimonthly brief on key leadership issues, and conducts quarterly surveys of member CEOs that explore key issues facing community colleges. To help meet the growing need for leadership development throughout the community college, in the coming year the League will conduct regional workshops on leadership excellence and partnership strategies.

Information Technology Initiative : The League's Information Technology Initiative helps community college administrators, faculty, and staff use information technology to improve teaching and learning, student services, and institutional management. The League's annual Conference on Information Technology (CIT) has attained international recognition as a state-of-the-art conference offering diverse learning options, hands-on computer labs, cutting-edge partner exhibits, and international distance learning links. In addition, the League's website serves as an asynchronous, online learning community and provides educators with the best community college resources on the Web. Examples of Information Technology Initiative activities for this initiative include the recent monographs Faculty Guide for Moving Teaching and Learning to the Web and Teaching at a Distance: A Handbook for Instructors. The League also involves member colleges in key technology projects with our corporate partners, such as Microsoft, IBM, TRO Learning, and Compaq.

Workforce Initiative : To help community colleges improve and expand their involvement in workforce preparation and development, the League, through its Workforce Initiative, has formed partnerships with a variety of companies and agencies. In collaboration with Microsoft Corporation and Nivo International, for example, the League Alliance helped members form a network of institutions offering Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) certification testing. The Workforce Initiative is highlighted at the annual Innovations conference in keynotes, forums, roundtables, and Learning Center courses dedicated to exploring workforce preparation and development. At the 2000 Conference on Information Technology, the League will co-host a summit with the Northwest Center for Emerging Technologies to explore the workforce needs for the Information Age economy.
