National Student Literary Competition Winners Announced

The winners of the 2011-2012 Student Literary Competition, hosted by Santa Fe College and coordinated by Susan Miller, were recently announced.

The first place awards were presented to Kevin L Earls, Johnson County Community College, for his essay titled, “White Lies, Brown Stains and Honesty;” Sarah White, Maricopa Community College District–Mesa Community College, for her poem, “Falling out of Love with Poetry;” Travis Duprey, Maricopa Community College District–Paradise Valley Community College, for his short story titled, “Look at Your Skin Where It Hurts;” and Pam Howe, Monroe Community College, for her one-act play, “The Resplendent Quetzal.”

The second place award winners include Kevin Eung, Foothill-De Anza Community College—De Anza College, for the essay, “Trail of Corpses;” Terence D. Dixon, St. Louis Community College—Florissant Valley, for a poem titled, “In a Minor Key;” Russell D. Brill, Cuyahoga Community College, for his short story titled, “Water In Between;” and Paige Goodwin, Anne Arundel Community College, for her one-act play titled, “Refraction.”

The third place awards went to Jenelle Swartley, Lane Community College, for her essay, “Code of Ethics, Code of Honor;” Brandy Walthall, Dallas County Community College District—Brookhaven College, for her poem titled, “Black Skin;” Lindsey Walker, Seattle Community Colleges—North Seattle Community College, for her short story titled, “The Trouble Dogs Get Into;” and Cass (Laura) McPhee, Humber College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, for her one-act play, “Clever Girl.” 

Honorable mentions were given to Dana Lee Shurtz, Maricopa Community College District—Mesa Community College for her essay titled, “Thunder Lizard;” Elizabeth Mata, Sinclair Community College, for her essay, “Hey, Where Did We Go?;” Jane Blakely, Johnson County Community College, for her poem, “The Waltz;” and Cindy Yeh, Foothill-De Anza Community College District—De Anza College, for her short story, “Seven Things.”

Under the leadership of Santa Fe College, the competition included 56 literary works from students at League board colleges. A catalog of all entries is currently being produced by Santa Fe College and will be mailed to League board members this fall.

The jurors for this year’s Student Literary Competition were Bill Belleville (Essay), Lola Haskins (Poetry), Manuel Martinez (Short Story) and Tamerin Dygert (One-Act Play).  Each of the judges has published works and won awards for their literary pieces. Visit for each of the juror’s full bios.
