2013 Innovation of the Year Project Detail.
Wake Technical Community College
Dr. Stephen C. Scott
Leadership and Organization
In 2009, when faced with how to create an energized culture of continuous improvement and innovation at North Carolina’s largest community college, President Stephen Scott decided to set an example by borrowing from the best colleges in the nation. He focused on a single problem facing the institution, researched colleges that were effectively addressing the same issue, and contacted the college presidents to learn what they had done. The next year, Dr. Scott asked his senior administrators to join him in repeating the process: identify a problem or initiative, find out who is addressing it the best, contact them to discover what they did and apply the practice to Wake Tech. Since 2011, this process has become known as Applied Benchmarking and is now practiced by every employee, resulting in college improvements in instruction, operations, and management while empowering staff and faculty to engage in continuous improvement activities directly related to their area of responsibilities.
