Train for Change

Carla Murphy, Associate Professor of Lifelong Wellness, created Train for Change, which is transforming the lives of employees and creating a ripple effect of wellness for their families, colleagues, and students. In fall 2010, Murphy recruited employees from faculty, support staff, and Student Services to train for a sprint triathlon. Her spirit, persistence, and support helped people make significant changes in their lives and fitness. The program has grown since then, adding more participants in more events, including indoor and outdoor sprint triathlons and other races around the state. Runners began taking pledges to support the Delta Foundation’s Special Needs Fund for students. Murphy’s intense personal support for each participant is a clear demonstration of Delta’s values of diversity, respect, and integrity, and of the Laughner Award’s criterion of “significant change in . . . personal growth and development of individuals or groups.”
How this project is being recognized:
Delta College's 2013 Don Laughner Award for Creative Change; a framed proclamation and an honorarium at the college's annual Employee Awards Dinner; publicized internally and via a full-page ad in three local newspapers
