Indian River State College has amped up it’s green initiatives with a strategically planned approach to sustainability for efficiency and cost effectiveness. Easily replicated, the Sustainable Campus Initiative incorporates 25 roadmap elements: energy efficiency, conservation, building commissioning, automation, data archiving, service learning, and expansion of the Virtual Campus. Results are evident with two Silver LEED buildings, deployment of over 50kW of renewable energy systems, and electricity savings of $1 million over the last three years. New instructional initiatives focus on sustainability in construction, using a net zero house, industry partnerships, and paid internships in alternative energy. Over 100 graduates of the Power Plant Technology Institute are hired at salaries averaging $55,000. Institute curriculum is the model for the Regional Center for Nuclear Education and Training, a consortium of 46 educational institutions, and 35 industry partners and agencies.
