2013 Innovation of the Year Project Detail.
The Homework Connection
Learning and Teaching
Julie Gilbert, Accounting Instructor at Triton College, developed The Homework Connection program to meet several ongoing needs she observed in her students for courses that they found challenging or intimidating. These various needs were impeding students' completion of homework and understanding of material to successfully complete the courses. The Homework Connection program was designed to increase student retention, completion, and success, and aligns with the college's mission statement. Julie was inspired by an observed tendency for some students to work together in the student cafeteria. She decided to hold voluntary gatherings or meetings of her students in a similar informal setting near the cafeteria around the lunch hour. Large round tables are set up to stimulate small groups of students working together or individually with her. Julie convenes and facilitates The Homework Connection gatherings regularly to assist students and foster regular homework completion.
