The Role of Class Discussion in the Learning-Centered Classroom

Sixth K. Patricia Cross Paper to be Released at League for Innovation Conference

PHOENIX, AZ - January 28, 2002- The League for Innovation in the Community College will release The Role of Class Discussion in the Learning-Centered Classroom, the sixth in the annual Cross Papers series by K. Patricia Cross, at the 2002 Innovations Conference, March 17 - 20, 2002, Boston Marriott Copley Place. In The Role of Class Discussion in the Learning-Centered Classroom, Cross defines and describes successful discussion techniques and provides tips for faculty who want to make their class discussions more learning centered and productive.

As she describes a variety of discussion methods, Cross acknowledges that instead of trivializing learning, class discussion can offer powerful experiences that put the student in an active learning mode. As usual, she intertwines theory and practice in a well-researched, practical monograph that is especially useful for faculty.

"The Cross Papers are highly anticipated by Innovations attendees," explains Cynthia Wilson, Vice President, Publications and Research, League for Innovation, "In the sixth paper, Pat Cross offers strategies for creating classrooms that are more learning-centered, a very timely contribution given higher education's current focus on learning."

K. Patricia Cross is Professor of Higher Education, Emerita at the University of California, Berkeley, and Senior League Fellow at the League for Innovation in the Community College. Cross has had a varied and distinguished career as a university administrator, researcher, and teacher.

The Cross Papers, published by the League for Innovation in the Community College, are generously sponsored by The Educational Testing Service (ETS). ETS is the world's premier educational testing organization and a leader in educational measurement research. A private nonprofit company dedicated to serving the needs of individuals, educational institutions and agencies, and governmental bodies in 181 countries, ETS develops and annually administers more than 11 million tests worldwide on behalf of clients in education, government, and business.
