National Student Art Competition
Winners Announced
The winners of the
2001-2002 Student Art Competition, hosted by Sinclair Community
College and coordinated by Sally Struthers, were recently
announced. The First Place "Best of Show" award was presented
to Paul McClelland, Miami-Dade Community College District,
for a sculpture titled "Tension." The Juror's Purchase
Award was presented to Cam Campman, Lane Community College,
for a plexi-glass titled, "Book of Self." The Juror's
Purchase Award Honorable Mention was presented to Jenn Daly,
St. Louis Community College District, for a black and white
photograph titled, "Arboretum."
The Second Place
award was won by Pamela Gilliland, Cuyahoga Community College,
for an oil on canvas titled, "Fabric Landscape"; and Third
Place awards were presented to Terese Jaeger, St. Louis Community
College District, for an oil on canvas titled, "Behind
Me"; Mike Hensel, Delta College, for digital art titled,
"Persistent Apprehension"; and Cam Campman, Lane Community
College, for a plexi-glass titled, "Book of Self."
Honorable Mentions
were given to 10 student artists, including Ariel Bracamonte,
Maricopa Community College District, for prism color markers
titled, "Child"; Mary Santos, Maricopa Community College
District, for a watercolor and photography titled, "Catchers
of the Light"; Kelly Hider, Monroe Community College,
for an oil on canvas/mixed media titled, "Apartment for Rent";
Mark Harris, Sinclair Community College, for an oil on canvas
titled "Rumpledlizbed"; Pam Tagariello, San Diego Community
College District, for a gouache, ink, and pastel on canson paper
titled, "Between Classes-MESA College"; Barry Printz,
San Diego Community College District, for wood furniture titled,
"Duck Table"; Jason Williams, Santa Fe Community College,
for a mixed media titled, "6"; James Duft, Johnson
County Community College, for a graphic art titled, "Self
#2 in Red"; Richard Young, University of Hawaii, for
an untitled ceramic; and Clare Mann, Monroe Community College,
for a collage titled, "Planet Music."
Under the leadership
of Sinclair Community College, the competition included nearly 100
works of art from League colleges. A catalog of all entries is currently
being produced by Sinclair and will be mailed to all League members
this fall.
The juror for the
2001-2002 Student Art Competition was David Black. David is a professor
emeritus from Ohio State University and created a Flyover sculpture
that is located on Main Street in Dayton, as well as large outdoor
sculptures at Wright State University and Ohio State University.
The 2002-2003 competition will be hosted by Moraine Valley Community
College and coordinated by Sue Linn.
