Wills For Heroes Service Learning Collaboration
This innovation, the first of its kind in the country, provided Paralegal Studies program students at Community College of Philadelphia with service learning experience in preparing estate documents for first responders. This undertaking was in collaboration with Wills for Heroes, a national nonprofit established after September 11th in response to the many first responders who perished without estate documents in place. Students underwent training in the utilization of document preparation software, wills and estates concepts, preparation of estate documents, and working with attorneys and clients. On the day of the event, 20 students worked with 45 police officers and fire fighters, under the supervision of volunteer attorneys, to create wills, advanced medical directives, and financial powers of attorneys.
