Accelerated WARM UPS: Workshop Approach to Remedial Mathematics Using Problem Solving

The general objective for this project was to improve the rate of successful remediation of our students and prepare them for and expedite their progression to a credit-bearing course. Our Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has tried various pedagogical approaches within the framework of a regular semester long course structure with limited success. Anecdotal evidence suggests that one reason some students fail and/or drop out of the class despite their perceived ability to succeed is that a semester long course covering concepts they have seen in elementary and secondary schools is too long to keep them motivated, and that they may be better served by a shorter workshop format for remedial arithmetic where they can practice and improve their skills rapidly.
